Where to find a Sckt 939 for relatively cheap? - Page 2

Oh, my motherboard doesn't even have overclocking options, but then again I haven't read that deep to translate what could be. Yeah I was looking at one that was an x2 4400+, which would probably be that much more to improve Crysis, but since you guys say my performance will boost from just a memory upgrade, that'll be what I do next. I think once I do that, I'll go for another one of these cards for SLI, and then I'll go local store searching to see if maybe I can get one of them to find me an old stock of 939's or somehow hold them hostage til' they can . If I'm lucky, I'm only about another $250 away.

EDIT: I'm looking at two different memory kits (2x1GB sticks). One is by G.Skill and the other A-DATA. They both have 5 star/egg ratings. Which one would you say to get?

G.Skill: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231039

A-DATA: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820211014

Well, if you're going to invest $250 in your rig, might as well just buy a new mobo, RAM, and CPU. Here are my suggestions (if you don't mind going Intel):

e2180, $70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116052
Gigabyte DS3L, $90: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128337
2GB G.Skill RAM, $45: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

More or less what I'm running, and I'd say more than what I need at the moment (also, I use Photoshop frequently, and things like batch converting, etc. is super fast). The DS3L should OC easily, but even at stock, I'd say it's plenty. Just FYI. Plus, it's only $205 before shipping (which shouldn't be too expensive since a lot of items have free shipping), and would far-exceed the performance of a similarly-priced S939 upgrade.

yeah, Idk if I'm ready for a new mobo yet, I at least want to wait until christmas where I can splurge a little more, but for now I'll have a really good system imo. I think when I do get a new mobo, cpu, and more ram, i'm gonna go higher quality and more speed.

EDIT: Also, when I get a new motherboard, I think i'm gonna opt for an SLI one. That's what I meant by a little more expensive.

Another EDIT: I've been seeing this 2.4 GHz CPU on newegg for some time that's 939. I know it's only 200MHz more, but would it be worth the $40 to get and would I be able to tell any kind of difference b/w my 2.2GHz one and that one?

So, any comments on whether the 3500+ to 4000+ would be worth the $40 upgrade?

In my opinion, it's too small a leap from what you have now to what you'll get. You'd be far better served looking for a dual-core S939 CPU; you'll definitely notice the difference with that upgrade.

Good luck on your quest for more performance!

I understand not wanting to get a new mobo--I think the only worthy upgrade from what you currently have would be to a dual-core CPU and 2GB RAM--that should tide you over for awhile.

yeah, I think the ram will, and I think I'll just wait to get a new cpu until I get a new mobo. I think when I do get a new mobo and cpu I'll go for a quad core or x4 from intel or amd.

EDIT: I do have one question. Even though I have 2 gig's of ram right now, would it be faster if I took out the DDR333 and left in the DDR400? Even though it would only be 1 gig of ram?

Good question--I think it would depend on what you're doing. If you're doing some very RAM-intensive tasks that require a lot of RAM, often you're better off with more, slightly slower RAM. But if you're doing things that don't need massive amounts of RAM, then I'd say you're better off with 1GB of the DDR400 RAM--in all honesty, I think the only way to know which is best is to pull the DDR333 and use your computer as normal--if you see lots of slowdowns and lag (your system might be seeking the pagefile a lot more often with 1GB vs. 2GB of physical RAM, but there's no way to know how much), then you'd probably be better off with all 4 modules.

EDIT--I just remembered you're using Vista--I'd say you're probably better off with 2GB of 333 speed RAM vs. 1GB of 400.

Yeah, that's the only thing I was wondering, haha, Vista isn't so bad IMO, so I think I'll go for some new RAM soon. Thanks for all the help guyladouche and others.
