Q6600 VS E8400 VS Tri-Core AMD

Thread Starter
I don't know which one to get! I have never had any past experience with overclocking, but will definately try to OC a bit. My card will either be a 4850, and if that sucks, I'll get the 8800GTS 512.

Well if you are planning to do high intensive Multi-tasking / video rendering / gaming, go for the Quad Q6600. These days more and more software / games only take advantage of 1-2 cores in a CPU. but more and more are trying to even all the load on all 4 cores so I would recommend Quad.

The E8400/E8500 , is primarily for Gaming , and those CPU's are great for overclocking (same with the Quad)

AMD unfortunately is not a good pick to go for... Intel is leading on Performance on their CPU's

I would go for an Intel because currently they are much faster.

If you mainly play games then an E8400 is more suited as many games aren't Quad Core optimized. If you edit movies, dvd's etc a Q6600 is a better option as then quad core is used fully.

Also in dual core conditions the E8400 will beat the Q6600 because it can normally overclock further(3.8ghz+).

Some may say get the Q6600 because its more future proof for when the q6600 is more utilized.

So basically its up to you for what you need it for

The difference is marginal at best and only shows itself when a game is cpu limited rather than gpu limited (see: over 100 fps)

Get a quad only if you can buy one off here with a low VID, since the ones being shipped out now have horrific VIDs and can't OC worth a damn.

In multi-threaded apps the Q6600 wins, hands down. Don't get the X3 from AMD. Those really suck.

Q6600 is by recommendation.

Actually its just luck of the draw...

my bud got 3 into the shop friday from compusa, VID were 1.265 - 1.215 - and the scorcher 1.325...

so they are still out there, just a matter of how lucky you get...

Mine is a 1.3125 VID and OC's to 3.4 with 1.43v, which is the same as most with lower VID... It just wont do even 3.5 with even 1.55v

Q6600 or if you want better OC get a Q6700 you will have a good chance of getting 3.6-4.0 out of it
