All the top super computers that support x86 are AMD based. This article seems fishy.

Wow.... Roadrunner only uses dual-core Opterons at 1.8GHz? If they replace all of those for the Barcelonas they would get a huge boost in processing power, even if they were running at the same 1.8GHz. That 75% can only go higher once Nehalem and QPI are out.

Supercomputers aren't about FAST CPUs.

Yes it is (from www.xbitlabs.com):
IBM's hybrid supercomputer, codenamed Roadrunner, built for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Los Alamos National Lab, burned its way into the TOP500 Supercomputer record book today as the most powerful system in the world. Its sustained performance of 1.02 petaflops (1.02 quadrillion calculations per second) - using the standard Linpack benchmark. It is the first general-purpose computer to reach this milestone. The new performance record represents more than twice the computational power of the reigning TOP500 champ, Lawrence Livermore's Blue Gene/L supercomputer.

There are other things that matter like high-speed links, but there certainly is about super fast CPUs.

Read this article from this point of view: 75% of the shipped graphic cards are Intel integrated, does that make Intel leader in graphic power?

The new fastest is Cell based, but it has some Opterons. The Cell is where the real FLOPS punch comes from though.

IBM built the computer for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration.[4][5] It is a hybrid design with 12,960 IBM PowerXCell[6] 8i CPUs and 6,480 AMD Opteron dual-core processors[7] in specially designed server blades connected by Infiniband. The Roadrunner uses the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system and is managed with xCAT distributed computing software. It occupies approximately 6,000 square feet (560 m²)[8] and became operational in 2008

Have fun replaced the 1000 or so CPU, plus motherboards lol might as well why a whole new blade center...
