I cant say how disapointed i am with current game legnths, you can sit and beat them in a few hours nowadays...
like halo 3 for example, it took most people between 2 and 10 hours to beat, or less......

while games like the Lego series games, take well over 100 hours to find everything 100% and still keep people pretty much entertained, until the next LEGO game arrives......

How the heck do you beat Halo 3 in two hours? I don't think I could even do that on Easy.

But back to the point...Halo 3's online game is the optional game play. Even if you get through the campaign in 10 hours, you've still got countless hours of multiplayer to go after.

Well, this explains why Deus Ex 2 was so disappointing. Spector the Great did so much with Unreal(Deus Ex) when everyone else was using Unreal2, and then he apparently went to the dark side. Instead of working wonders with an existing game engine DX2 got a new one - at the expense of the writing, level design, everything else, and then was further dumbed down for the Xbox. Basically it became a study in the creation of a train-wreck, all for the sake of a graphics engine that didn't impress.

And now we know why, he's been seduced by the graphics nazis.

I own CoD4, GUN, and Assassin's Creed. I own Bioshock and I flirted with Oblivion before deciding that it bored the crap out of me. Deus Ex is still my favorite title ever, with the Max Payne series coming in a close second while I still love to load a my copy of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, fan patches and all. I once had the demo for Crysis on my system, which I beat and then uninstalled and haven't given the game a thought since. Basically single player games don't have to push graphics technology if they have a good creative team, level design, and good WRITING. They don't have to be deep(GUN), but as long as they are fun we will buy them.

I'd rather they use last year's graphics engine and put the money into writing, art and level design, because everybody gets more for the money.

EDIT: Also, it's quite obvious that rasterization has reached the limits of it's cost effectiveness. The industry needs to switch to ray tracing to cut the in game animation bill. All of that combined and they could start making games longer again.

Further EDIT: The only game that I can prove that I spent one hundred hours on is FFX. It was an interesting experience having to be careful to avoid killing the bosses right away so that I could have Riku and Kimhari rob them blind..

so there needs to be a balance of length, and content, kind of like mario 64, it's long but repetitive, zelda is somewhat repetitive but there are side quests and other random events that help ease that pain of repetitivenes, reminds me of the song by hot chip, over and over.

I agree. The only game I am willing to spend that much time on would be an MMO. In this new age, why play an RPG that lasts ages, with NPCs, when you could instead play online with a bunch of real people.

The only downside is that good RPGs have always been able to provide some really amazing stories.... but seriously, who has time for that? I did back when I was in middle school, for a select few titles (FF7, Chrono Trigger)... but even then, I would end up playing the game in so many different segmented sessions that I would not remember half of what the complete story was by the end.

I want more <15 hr games. Heck, I'll take a few 8 hours games. I rather have short games, that provide good replay value.

BTW, I'm a 24 y/o professional. Go figure.

Going against the grain here....but i like shorter games. I like being able to play it and beat it within 6-8 hours. Mainly because i lose interest much too quickly.

I grew up playing rpg's on the snes, ps1 andps2....I have played at least 10 rpg's that took me 60+ hours to beat.
I loved those games, i would replay them over and over.
Suikoden, final fantasy, chronotrigger, etc etc. oblivion even.
Wish i could get refreshes of these games with current gen graphics.

I want quality games that last a while. Is that so hard to do, or so undesirable for game developers?
If I can finish a game in under 10 hours and don't feel tempted to go through it again that which I spent on it is wasted money. They can also be sure I won't be buying the sequel or expansion or next episode either.
That leads me to the second problem of current games - them being unfinished (Crysis). I want a complete game, or if it's not complete at least say so on the box. I don't want to find out I have to spend more money just to play the second part of the game.
I get it that they want us to pay more while offering less, but this doesn't work - it's not a good way to do business. Sooner or later customers will have enough and move on.
