Is it bad to overvolt ram?

Thread Starter
I looked around on the forums and couldn't find a solid answer.

I've been testing for 3.4ghz @ 378 fsb at 4:5 fsb:dram and 4-4-4-12 timings.
The rated voltage for my memory sticks is 2.0 - 2.1 volts. I ran memtest86 with the above settings at 2.1 volts and the test failed. I ran the above settings at 2.2 volts and the test passed. Is overvolting .1 bad for the hardware?

okay so a rule a thumb is to never exceed ram voltage specifications, thanks

it wont hurt it if you do it once in a while, for benching and such, but 24/7, yes, it WILL hurt it.

the only way i would recomend overvolting is to get active cooling over the ram.

3.4ghz, mem @ 4:5, 5-5-5-15, 13643 3dmark06
3.4ghz, mem @ 1:1, 4-4-4-12, 13614 3dmark06
3.2ghz, mem @ 1:1, 4-4-4-12, 13477 3dmark06

look at that whopping 29 mark difference between different ram specs at 3.4ghz

Anyway... the ram works at 2.1 volts with 5-5-5-15 when exceeding ddr800, when it is 800 or below 4-4-4-12 works. Thanks for the replies, my ram could have eventually died if I didn't ask about the overvolting.

2.1v is the safe 24/7 limit for the majority of DDR2 without special cooling.

Some older chips can take more, but past 2.1v the risk of damaging your ram increases exponentialy.
