[softpedia] HD4870 at Just $299 - Page 6

post #51 of 92
Although there is a price war, it is still expensive to pay more than $300 for just a graphic card in my opinion... and I'm using 3870x2

want 4870 so bad...

Where did you live?
6x86 and 6x86mx OCed like mad against a Pentium I.

You just needed a Board that liked them and some voltage !

@Topic

Good thing is that NV can't go much cheaper with the GTX-260.
The monster DIE is to expansive to compete such a price battle...

While there is definitely a price war going on to gain market share I think there is a bit more going on than that. I wouldn't be surprised if part of it is economic conditions...things aren't so great, at least here in the States they aren't. As the prices of everything from gas to food to utilities goes up and people are tightening their belts there is less and less $$$ for non-essentials. Justifying a $300-400 graphics card when it costs you almost $100 to tank up an average family vehicle is pretty tough, especially when the income hasn't risen at the same rate as the bills.

I will say this though, when a tank of gas is 1/3 the coast of agood video card it certainly makes it look like the card is "cheap".

At least the sign the cards were sitting above said $150 and I'm pretty sure it said 4850. I'll go back and look today.

The only thing swaying my opinion is how hot the new ATI cards run. I really am hoping the 4870 runs much cooler than the 4850. If it does, my new system is going to be ATI powered.

ATI has always been cooler than Nvidia. And yes apparently the 4800 will be a cooler card that uses less power.

i'd be shocked if its $150..probably an error if it is. Only thing i see listed on bestbuy.com is the VisionTek 4850 for $199, which still isnt bad, considering theyre also selling a 8800gts for $400. I'm definately heading to bestbuy tomorrow morning to check it out

ATI MIGHT win this round in the mid-range section, but nVidia will always have the lead in the high-end.

Last time I checked 2 x 4850's were quite a bit faster than a GTX280 (and a lot cheaper). That leads me to believe that 2 x 4870X2 will be quite a bit faster than even GTX280 SLI.
