What IP to choose?

Thread Starter
Hey,

This is probably an idiot question, but how can I choose an IP that actually works? My Guinea pig probably knows looking at him, but he can't explain too well, I'm lost after the first squeaks...

Well my network topology: an ADSL router is the interface to the web. My rig and other two are connected wired or wireless to the router with the option "obtain an IP address automatically".

Since I'd like to open/close some ports and make them accessible only for my rig I need to set in the router config utility the port, protocol and IP of the computer that is alowed to use it. So far so good, I've done it - I've opened a port for the IP 192.168.0.4

The problem is how do I set this IP for my rig? So I click start/network connections/properties/TCP_IP (here Rontz squeaks som' but he's just too confuze to pass something usefull) and set the folowing:
-Use folowing IP adress 192.168.0.4
-Subnet mask 225.225.225.0
-Gateway??????
-Use the folowing DNS server adress: ???????

For the question marks I have no idea what to set, but I have attached a print screen of my router's config tool, maybe you'll figure it out:

I've tried to set the gateway at 192.168.0.254 or 192.168.0.1 but it didn't work.

Rep+ for helpers, thanks.

the gateway should be 192.168.0.1, or whatever the IP of your router is.

you will have to check the DNS settings on the router to get that IP information and plug it in.

So from the picture above I take it that my freebox's IP is 192.168.0.254.

I put these numbers in the Gateway field?

What about the DNS? What is a DNS?

P.S. I may be a network noob but I can lift 160 pounds

DNS = Domain Name Service

When you enter "www.abc.com" into your address bar, your computer has no idea what IP address that site has. So it has to look it up through a DNS server. If that DNS server doesn't have that site in it's database, it asks ITS DNS server. And so on.

DNS server can be either your router's IP or your ISP's server's IP, either one will work fine.

dns stands for domain name service or something like that, basically it resolves www.google.com for whatever the IP for that domain is. if you have DNS wrong then when you type www.google.com it won't know where to go.

im' not familiar with that router or that language haha, but i don't think the ip would be 192.168.0.254.

heres what i suggest, go to one of the other computers with the automatic IP and go to start>run and type cmd

then type ipconfig /all

and take a screen shot and post the results, then i can help you better.

I actually took it the other way around. With your command I actually found out my own IP and modified the router settings to fit the automatic IP that hopefully won't change.

This language that I can't understand either is French... There's a thing you get quickly accustomed in Fr, nobody really knows all the aspects of the language and being a huge country, it has quite a few dialects pretty different from one another. Not even the natives can say they know everything. But I digress,

Thanks again, it works WOHOO!
