Need help OC CPU

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I have read many of the articles here on this site and havn't really quite found the solution for my problem.

I can't get my CPU past 2904 MHz. Right now, my Vcore setting is on [Auto]. I have tried to change my Vcore through my bios to 1.35,1.375,1.40,1.425,1.45v. My computer will turn on and once the desktop loads it, a blue screen flashes for about 2 seconds and my computer will restart. Sometimes, at the lower Vcore settings, the computer will flash the blue screen during windows loading screen.

At the moment, I am stable with my current OC. Check it out in my sig. Additional info:

FSB: 264 MHz
HT Multi: x11
HTT Multi: x4
PCI-E: 2500 MHz
Vdimm: [Auto]
DRAM Multi: 667MHz - which is 414 MHz w/ the FSB @ 264

I have tried to lower my FSB to 250 and HT Multi to x12 to hit 3GHz, with Vcore @ 1.45V, and Vdimm @ Auto. And still the blue screen comes up after the desktop is loaded.

1.) I did not lower my ram timings because if it is stable at the higher FSB, then lowering the FSB shouldn't make the RAM unstable, should it?
2.) Any suggestions of how i can get my CPU past 3 GHz?
3.) or do you think i've already maxed out my chip?

It's kind of awkward that I've maxed out my chip with a Vcore [Auto] setting.

Hey, Welcome to OCN... you've done very well so far, and you've definately done your research.
TO answer your questions...
1) Right now you're running your ram at 828MHz, which is perfect for PC6400
2) we'll get to that in a minute
3) no, no i don't think you've hit the wall yet.

Something is strange here... you can't hit 3.0GHz (250x12) @ 1.45v? I hit 3GHz 2 days ago with my 4600+ (250x12) @ 1.4v. its got to be something else. If i had to make a guess i'd say that you're encountering problems with your PCI-E speed, see if you can find a way to run a divider on it ( same concept as ram dividers). Also set your vdimm manualy if you can (somewhere around 1.95-2.2v should be fine). Try that and we'll see what happens.
from what you've listed so far the only option i see missin is ur vdimm voltage settings, try to set that manually and you might need to tinker with ur Dram settings just so things would stay put and another problem i saw from ur sig rig is that you're currently using 2 sets of different mem's made from different companies, that sometimes its hard to deal with too esp. gettin stability. even tho the specs maybe the same, both kits are 6400's but its very different in reality different manufacturer different ram pcb's and what not and lastly they probably have different timings. and just for your future references refrain from usin all 4 dimmsockets, seein that would put a heavier load on the memory controller, so if anything get a new set of 2x 2gb kit if youd like to keep 4gb's in ur system or simply just use one of ur current 2gb kits.

Guys,

Thanks for your reply. Very helpful.
Sorry for my late response, It's been pretty hectic lately.

I did not touch my PCI-E speed, i left it at 100MHz, I don't think my FSB is linked to the PCI-E as I have a seperate controller for the PCI-E speed itself, it's set to 100 in the bios which is 2500MHz when using nTune. (2500Mhz is stock).

As for my Vdimm, i took your advice and i changed it. It's now at:
4-4-4-8 2T tras = 24, timings w/ Vdimm @ 2.2v
I'm trying to OC this even more, I will set it @ 2.3v and i will try to lower my tras timing to 20 and maybe like tcyl to 7.
In your guys's opinion, would it be safe to lower the tras timings from 24 to 20?

As for my CPU, I am currcently now stable at 2928 MHz (244 FSB* 12 multi) @ 1.4625v. It seems like this is the cap, when i try to increase it to 3000Mhz (250 * 12), i need to increase the Vcore to 1.55v and this is making my cpu to hot, under load @ 1 hour, testing w/ prime95, it would reach up to temps of 60c. With my current settings, under load @ 8 hours, i would get 50c.
To me, it seems like i've maxed out my CPU, what do you guys think?

Any response would be really appreciated.

Thanks guys!

just remember timing's doesnt really matter, what matters here is gettin every mhz out of ur chip as much as possible, so sometimes youd find yourself with a higher clock with looser timings. after findin ur optimum clock thats when we go and tighten uo timings. but like i said youre still runnin 2x different kits. so its always hard. why dont u go test around with just one of the kits in ur system. also youre forgettin that mem bandwidth doesnt really matter in a64 platforms so thus if you put ur rams on a divider it'll increase your milage. =] so drop it down to 266divider and see what happens then, that way you know ur ram wouldnt be a stability factor.

your doing great, i'd also have to agree that the timings you have set are pretty darn tight. (smaller numbers mean tighter timings and harder to be stable at higher speeds) what are the stock timings for your ram. I'd go back to those, as now that you've set your multi to 12 your ram is running at DDR988( at least thats what i think they should be at... doing the math in my head right now), which is pretty high, especially for 4 sticks of ram.

Thread Starter
I’ve lowered my RAM timings to 667 mhz w/ 5-5-5-18, tcl=24 timings.
My CPU needs 1.50v to get it to 2952 mhz (246 * 12). The temp under load is around 55c which is a bit hotter than what I’d like. And I’ve heard that AMD’s should not be pushed more than 1.45v unless i’m using water cooling for my computer.
So right now, I’m thinking that I’ve reached the max speed for my CPU for safe temperatures. Currently now @
2928 mhz (244 * 12) @ 1.4625v w/ temps @ load of 50c @ 8 hours of prime95.
I also think this is my max CPU speed because its taking 0.0375 volts to get an extra 24 mhz (2928 to 2952), so to me, it seems like the performance/voltage is starting to cap off.
1.) Would you guys agree that this is about the max I can get without reaching to hot of temps?

After I’ve figured that was my max CPU speed, I now have my RAM set at these settings:
667 mhz w/ 4 – 4 – 4 – 7, tcl = 16, @ 2.3 volts. (667 mhz turns out to be 366*2=732 mhz w/ a FSB=244)
Since OCZ warranties their ram up to 2.3 volts, I would think that is a safe voltage.
& Crucial ballistix that I have come with a stock voltage of 2.2 volts so an increase of 0.1 wouldn’t really harm it that much.
2.) I think these are pretty good timings at a reasonable voltage, do you guys think this voltage is safe?

Looks like your pretty close to maxed out... but i still have a few more thoughts.

It appears that your RAM is doing just fine, those voltages shouldn't hurt them. In fact those are kinda high voltages for the speeds you're running them at. you might try coming down just a bit in Vdimm and see if it affects your stability.

Whoever told you that you cant go over 1.45v on vcore without being on water didn't know what was going on. what he meant was still valid though. that without proper cooling you shouldn't push your voltage to high. your temps are pretty good right now, even if they are coming close to 55c (thats just a target to shoot for, some of the quads are hitting 60's on their load temps).

my last thought... have you tried uping your chipset voltage? That can sometimes help with stabiltiy, and allow you to run a lower Vcore. It could be the weak spot right now... but then again it might not be, but its worth a shot.
If you lower your ram speeds even more, you should be able to get about a 3.2 out of your processor. Great job on the OC.
55C on air is just about the edge for AMD chips. so 55C on air is still good, trust me i've used 1.55volts on my 939chip before and its gotten 58C so its still good, but ofcourse not the way to extend the lifetime^.o. but 55C when loaded is fine by me. just my .2$
