Wireless storage solution

Thread Starter
I recently bought a macbook with 120 hdd but that's not even enough for my porn collection JK BTW. I have 500GB on my desktop on which I could setup a server so I can access my music and movie collection anywhere but then my energy bill will kill me every month because I would have to leave my desktop on everytime I want to access the files. I was thinking about an usb hdd but then I would have to be syncing both computers which I don't really have time for. To make the long story short I would like a cheap wireless drive with at least 320GB that I can access from any computer connected to the internet. Since I'm running both mac and vista I wonder if I would be able to have full permition to read and write to the drive.

you should be able to just get an enclosure that has a network port built into it and plug it into your router, then it would act like a network drive that both computers could access.

Try the NSLU2 from Linksys. It's basically a tiny Linux server and very hackable. It has 2 usb ports for data storage (I think only one works with a hard drive, not 100% sure with this) and an ethernet port so you can attach it to your switch. See here for information on hacking the NSLU2. Note that loading custom firmware onto the device isn't strictly necessary. You can stick with the default firmware and you get a perfectly capable solution.

if you set up your router to port forward, then yes you would be able to.

Can you recommend any? I was looking through newegg but I'm clueless on which one I should pick and I read that WD wont allow me to share my files on the network. This is really important for me because I want to be able to stream/download w/e I have in the drive anywhere in the world I am.

FreeNAS, you can use just about anything to run it and you can save/access files from any computer on your network.
