How much performance increase?

Thread Starter
How much of a performance increase would i see with an 8800GT over my current 7800GTX OC SLI setup. My current setup will play most new games sometimes even maxed out, though i don't have a very high resolution so that might explain the FPS.

I don't have that much money to spend on a new card, probably whatever my current cards get + around £50. I'm really considering getting an 8800GT because of DX10 and CUDA (I'm getting vista soon).
Or should i just spend the money on a new mobo, as the one I've got at the moment really does suck.

Looking at your rig that should be just fine. The 8800GT is only slightly slower than the GTX. I think this would be a nice boost to what you already have in addition to adding the CUDA support that you are looking for. I assume you are looking at this because you plan or already do FOLD? I ask cause I am not aware of anything at the moment that uses CUDA other than folding.

The MB would still leave you with a lack of CUDA support. So if you really want it and its a one or the other thing then I would go with the Vid Card. Thats my .2 at least.

You would get a minor boost at best, mainly because you have two 7800 GTX's..

I would upgrade your motherboard and CPU (Intel?). But with the Nehalem just around the corner, save your money, and buy that once it comes out.

This is true but he wants CUDA and he won't get that with a new MB. Also I should of asked do you plan on upgrading anytime soon after this or is this going to be your main upgrade for awhile?

Yea, I would be using it for folding. And I didn't know you needed a CUDA supported mobo too?

Wait, the mobo needs CUDA support too? This is news to me.

And I suppose you can drop the money on an 8800GT if you want to begin folding with it.

No what I meant was that if you went with MOBO only no Video Card you would not get CUDA with your current SLI config since its 8800 series and above. Sorry for the confusion.

Knowing this and given:

A) You want to fold
B) CUDA Support
C) Only Upgrade for a bit

I would go with the video card. Reasoning is:

If you go with a MB only yes you can still fold but you can't use CUDA with the 7800 series. Also and this is small since your getting vista and have an Interest in DX10 you also lose that. So this is why I say it just based on the points that you brought up.

If you were going to upgrade later I would say MB, then video card, then CPU. This is not the case however and you have a few specific things that you want and the MB only upgrade would not give you. The Video Card will however provide those.
