this is a copy&paste from another forum

well here you go guys a chance to shape and mold the direction a noob and maybe even shape him a little bit. I ended up buying a s5 for my wife last month when her cheapy sony broke (always make the pregnant wife happy) and since then I have caught a little bit of the photo bug myself. with that I'm thinking of getting myself a camera now so we don't have to share but also to hopefully help out with a few issues I don't care for with the S5.
now I admit I'm not a good photog and I have a lot to learn but some things of the S5 just don't sit well with me. the noise performance of the camera is bothering.the color fringing is horrible a lot of times. sure for the most part it is livable but at other points it just flat out is horrible. even at 80iso when taking a night shot with longer shutter speeds there is very obvious noise in the picture. once you try to use iso 200 you notice a lot of the colors just blur together and you lose a lot of detail on the picture, and if you go to the next step at iso 400 you start getting tons of noise on the image the lack of ability to really get a more shallow DOF doesn't seem to happen even when using the super macro mode. Plus the issues with focusing. it's slow to focus and in lower then optimal light or certain fuzzy objects like my pet black rabit in macro mode make it hard almost fail to focus all together. then when trying to do a manual focus it's slow, a little unwieldy and again in low light there is too much noise on the EVF to make a decent manual focus. with that mixed with a moving object makes life interesting. sure might get a lucky shot (which I have before) but it makes it a little frustrating. sorry about the rant here it is more of a pointing out my issues to see if a DSLR might be a better option for me even with my lack of skill. if your curious take a look these are at least what I have uploaded so far. http://flickr.com/photos/rx7speed/ if you want to comment be blunt your not going to hurt my feelings just make sure it is constructive is all I ask.

The camera I was thinking about was the xti as it seems to be a very popular camera and with me not having a lot of money seems to carry a decent price tag also. how would this camera handle compared to my complaints with the S5? I know a lot depends on the lens and granted I might go with a cheaper lens to at least be able to shoot (ie the stock lens that comes with the camera "kit). Or if you have a camera that might be a little better that would be around 500or so give or take though under would be nice but I doubt that one . Also once I could afford a decent lens which ones would you recomend to a guy on a budget.

I also have a few questions regarding operation of a DSLR camera (thinking of the xti above or your own personal choice). With focus and adjusting zoom how is that handled? on lens, on camera, or both? with auto focusing speed, quality, and hit/miss percentage would that compare to the S5? when doing a manual focus you are going off of true image not a electronic display correct? Can the LCD screen also be used as a view finder if need be (found that does come in handy sometimes ) or is the LCD display used only for showing camera information. with canon RAW images can they be loaded directly into photoshop or do they need conterted first to DNG? I don't do much PP work (don't know how) but I'm learning and so helps to know. Does the XTI handle intervalometer pictures or anymotion sensing? if not does it have a program like CHDK or equiv that can be loaded (not that important just curiosity). What is a diopter and when do you need to change that? How often do you need to go in an manually clean the sensor itself? Last question here also is what is the "auto depth of field" shooting mode and how is it different then the aperature priority?

Again sorry about this long post but it's a bit of money at least and I'm sure only going to cost more as time goes on so I figured it would be best here to be informed with what I'm trying to do so to make a better choice as to if it is really want I want at this point or if I should just stay with the S5 for now.

the other question I have though is if I did want to upgrade would it be more worthwhile just to possibly skip the xti all together and get the 1000D?
