First Build. Decisions, Decisions.

Thread Starter
Well, to start, I have about a $3000 budget to work with. At first I was set in stone on going all out for a 790i setup until I discovered the x48 boards, among other things. I'm looking at the MSI X48 Platinum, is there a better x48 board with ddr3 support? Also, will a Tuniq Tower fit ok on this? I don't plan to ever go SLI considering the cost, power reqs, and monitor resolution limitations, etc. so I believe this is my best option.

I want to take advantage of a board with ddr3 for future gaming and application possibilities. I know it's expensive and games don't take advantage of it as of yet but it is within my budget with this build and I won't have to worry about upgrading this part of my system for quite some time.

I do plan on snagging a 24" monitor so I'll be playing at 1920x1200 for most games. I will be going with a single nvidia GPU solution for now while I wait on the 4870 & 4870x2 specs and benchmarks which will hopefully be available in the next few months. I'm also aware of SLI/crossfire scaling problems in some games BUT I do like having the option to go crossfire with this board if I get two 4870's instead of the 4870x2 and happen upon a 30" monitor down the road

I'm thinking the MSI 8800 GTS OC will be fine for now. I should be able to turn around a sell it without losing much in a few months when the 4870/x2's arrive.

As for particular games, I plan on playing AoC on max settings and games like Crysis eventually with high to very high settings if possible (may settle for 1600 x 1050 for better performance there)

As for my processor, I'm still stuck between an e8500 and a q9450, but leaning well towards the quad seeing as I also work in mutiple 3d/2d applications regularly (Maya, CS3 apps, etc). I hear the recent batch of q6600's aren't clocking well plus the 9450 produces less heat and features more cache correct?

Anyhow, here's the full list:

I'm sure I'll think of more, so thanks in advance guys!

I would get this mouse:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104203

This power supply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139007

Consider either of these cases:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133056

Nab this harddrive:

The rest looks superb.

Edit: If you don't want to go DDR3, then consider this motherboard:

If you don't plan SLI, the brand-new P45 chipset is worth a look.

or

l agree with the other decision, with the possible exception of the PSU. The OP1000 is a GREAT PSU, but you might want a modular PSU, like this Corsair:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139007

But then again, for a rig like yours... you don't need 1000W. This Corsair HX620 will do the job just fine, and save you about $100:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139002

Even with the 4870, the HX620 won't even break a sweat. No need to spend money for something you don't need.

If he had an x48 chipset, then he would be doing CF. That means he could get a 4850 today, and then use it in crossfire with a 4870x2 once that comes out.

Actually that seems like a really good idea, with the 4850 performing around where a 9800GTX does on new drivers...

While SLI isn't an option I'm interested in (new 200 series is expensive and insane power reqs) I would possibly consider crossfire later if I were to step up the my monitor to a 30". As for the PSU, I'm not worried about the 4870 in terms of power but the possibility of a 4870x2. Will a 620 be enough? I suppose a new PSU won't be that much of a stretch in terms of upgrades later if needed, but perhaps something around 800 may be more worthwhile either way?

Thanks!

I assumed that when he said that he wasn't going SLI, that he meant in general that he doesn't want to go multi-GPU (a wise decision imo).

He stipulated that he was planning on buying a 4870\\4870x2, so if he got a 8800GTS now, that card would be either sold or collecting dust.

I see what you're getting at though.

sorry for the confusion. there's a small chance I would consider crossfire, but it's nice to have the option open should that happen. I haven't heard much about the new p45's but that board looks really nice. Is the x-fi audio integrated? would save room for a GPU cooler and x-fi should outperform the audigy SE correct?

Even with two dual-slot cards in CF\\SLI, I would think you could still make room for a single slot sound card. Still, onboard audio is becoming rather good nowadays.

The new P45 boards are quite good, their the same thing P35 was to x38. Just a cheaper version of the X48 platform, with a few less features priced for people who don't want to spend $250+.

Case: I suppose the black Armor+ would be the better bang for the buck, I was just trying to save a little weight with the aluminum case and I absolutely love the silver color but we'll see still within the budget with the aluminum.. But I'm keeping the cost of a 4870x2 in consideration as well. I imagine it'll be a while before a price for it comes out. Surely it will compete against the gtx280 in all areas..
