5.4ghz, are you serious?, even phase cooled C2Q's can't pull that, and is harder to do on 45nm quads than 65nm.

not to mention the common $1200 computer package from an electronics store has a q6600/q6700 locked at 2.4/2.66ghz

3.4ghz on air cooling is "the norm" for q6600 G0's, nothing more, even Intel fanboys would flame you for that one so i hope it was a joke

All it needs is a little tweaking for single threaded performance and a die shrink and it'll be a very nice chip.
Yeh, but when they first came out, noone could get past 3.0 and that wasnt because of the bug, and only now they can, even though the bug has been fixed for months.

WE DON'T NEED QUAD-CORES YET!!
seriously, i hate to be "that guy" but for gaming, dual-cores are leading the market for at least 3 years. in 3 years, cheaper and faster quads are coming out! but yeah, 3.4 for a phenom gets me crazy! that means 2 cores on a phenom can max out my 5400+ at 3.2!

AMD is probably getting over the "bump" so yields are probably getting better.

It was actually a problem with the southbridge that was messing up everyones overclock

With the new SB750, all the problems should disappear.

How nice. Now, the big question is does it make sense to wait for AM3 or go down the AM2+ route. I would go down the AM2+ route if I knew for sure that the only sacrifice I'd be making is DDR3 memory. Then again, it has dropped in price too quite a bit so maybe waiting for 45nm with AM3 is not a bad idea. Then do a complete overhaul of my system. By that time the new graphics cards should be much lower priced too and the mystery 4870X2 will be out as well. It's been so long since I had a single card solution, even if it is two GPUs smashed together

How sad that a chipset could screw up a cpu so badly, plus I think HT 3.0 is just now coming out too right?

They were just having problems getting the clock generator to work correctly, but yea it sucks that they didn't have this problem fixed before launch. They just don't have the same resources as someone like Intel.

HT3.0 is coming with the 45nm chips and AM3 if I recall correctly. I don't think you'll be seeing it on Agena-based chips.
I'm just going with the AM2+ chips, personally, I don't see the need to go out and buy DDR3 memory when I will be doing very little overclocking. I suppose my rig will be mainly based on AMD products. (ATI and Phenom.)

Ding, ding, I do believe we have a winner. Add in really decent memory and aftermarket cooling and who knows how far these can go. I doubt that they can made competitive with an Intel equivalent, but they are probably good enough for any game you want to throw at it.

I'm holding off until AM3 at least. My next purchase is a 40in LCD and so this system will have to get me by for another year. Even if not, I would still wait. It just doesn't make sense to buy AM2+ with AM3 hitting supposedly sometime around Q1-2 next year.
