I had to do the same thing with a washer that size to get it to set on the i7 good and not move like crazy. But I tried the garment mod and my mobo started to bend, so that did not work well. The washer mod seems to work he best.

What's the recommended type of metal for the washer? Which would have the best heat conductivity?

I went to Home Depot and saw some Zinc-plated Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and I think maybe just straight up Aluminum.

Didn't seem to see any copper washers though.

OK, I did this and my temps dropped quite a bit.

My TRUE is lapped but my E8400 is not and it's OC to 4GHz.
I ran prime95 for one hours and recorded the temps.....

Before washer mod temps were at 59c
After washer mod temps were at 50c

This washer mod IS A MUST!!!!!

next week or so I will lap the CPU to see if it helps as well.
