Sound Card broke, I think

Thread Starter
Background: So I did a custom fan wiring job for my computer a few months back cause my -12v rail was good enough to power a 120mm fan designed for 24volts.
The electrical tape peeled off, shorted PSU, PSU broke (stupid me never got around to soldering it although i have an iron that I use often, just twisted the wires and taped, if i had soldered and capped it would be fine)

Issue: Just got a new PSU (see sig) and was worried that nothing else would work (because of the PSU short), but everything did -- except the sound card (PCI DiamondTek XtremeSound 7.1 w/ optical in/out)

My Thoughts: I'm not sure if its broken. This has happened once before, reinstalling (physically) the PCI card worked...although I cannot decipher why. I was getting no sound from my X-530's and windows was using system beeps for notifications, thus no sound card detected (not even the mobo sound ). In Slackware Linux, alsa did not see a sound card, previously it had. It likewise did not even see the onboard sound.

Whenever I plug in a (correctly-sized) 1.5mm audio cable from my headphones, headset, speakers, etc. into the unrecognized card there is an electrical pop sounding like a short or spark and the computer shuts down, and restarts.

Question: If it's gone, what sound card should i get under $50? This one was phenomenal for the price, only $17 and it was 192kHz sampling rate and 7.1...

I have read the forum a lot before joining and I know when I say under $50 there are those who will
1) say just use onboard anything under $50 is all crap anyway
2) post an item over $50 saying its worth it

so I really mean under $50, in fact I would only like to pay $30 for it but I am willing to go up to $50 if needed. Should have 192kHz sampling rate and 7.1 and at least one aux on the pcb in addition to the line-in on the pcb

Welcome to OCN.

I suggest trying to install that sound card in another machine and see if it works. Although it doesn't sound good when you said you get a popping noise and the system shuts down, makes me think the card is dead.

I'm not sure what a good card would be for you with that budget, but there was a deal on a Creative XFI XtremeMusic somewhere. Can't find it, if I come across it I'll let you know.

I seriously almost took a flyer on one of these last Monday, just out of curiosity and because of the super-attractive price.

Good luck on your quest for a new sound card!

did you strip all existing drivers and reinstall? And failing that, you may want to look at this as an upgrade opportunity... as zullia said extreme gamer, is a great card, on the cheap.
