Best Fan for Phenom X4 9850 BE

Thread Starter
Fixing to buy a 9850 Black Edition, I'm curious what are the best fans to cool off this chip? (Likely plan on overclocking when the 790GX comes out)

I am recommending a Thermalright ultra extreme 120 (heatsink only, no fan) + ultra kaze 120mmx38mm 2k rpm fan (3k rpm if you dont mind the noise). lap it and you'll have one of the top air-cooled heatsinks there.

Either that or the new heatsink that Noctua has. They did some benchmarks on it and it cools just as well as the TRUE does, PLUS it comes with the Noctua fan for the same price as the TRUE by itself. If you add an extra fan to the Noctua ( it can do push + pull ) it's even better than the TRUE.

I lapped my TRUE + 1 Noctua fan and I get around 31c core idle and around 45c core load ( core temps are about 4c higher than the CPU temps ) running prime on all 4 cores.

Funny thing is my computer gets real unstable beyond 2.8ghz. Vista just locks up randomly for no reason. It will run prime fine for hours but lock on stupid things like Firefox

For quads, and seeing as you are opting for higher-end, I recommend the TRUE or IFX-14 if you can fit it. Theres also my thread ''Air Cooling for dummies'' if you want to know more about fans.

It might end up as a FAQ/Guide when the FAQ section gets resurrected.

Thanks

I'm trying to figure out how to turn the titles into nice letters like in the stickied thread about modding the Big Typhoon.

And no matter which cooler you choose, I recommend the Ultra-Kaze 2000 for the best price/performance/noise.
