In fact, all of your posts suggest that the 1GB of memory is useful when it is in Crossfire furthers this misconception by implying that this card is specifically for that. It doesn't make sense for him to have been talking about Crossfire anyway, and even if he were, Modki's original post was still confusingly written.

After reading that I want to beat my head against a brick wall repeatedly.
Doesn't really matter though if its for CF or not right? Why have a 512 model and then when you want to CF have less results? Just make a standard 1gb model...

1GB 4850 + 512 4850 = 1GB 4850? that is the question....

mabye the 1GB 4850 will turn into the 3850 512
and the 512 4850 turns into the 3850 256

Uh...... what??

Crossfired cards are generally going to yield better results than the single card, regardless of how much memory the card(s) have.

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say here though.... please type more coherently.

Maybe I'm wrong but I feel that the original question was related to bus width. They didn't mention anything about Crossfire when posing the question.

Think of all of the cards pre-48xx/2x0 that have had 1GB of memory. Many people have said that the extra 512MB of memory is useless because of the bus width/bit interface being used. That was my interpretation of the question anyway.

Will this card suffer the same fate or will the higher frequencies power through all of that?

The setup is limited by the lower card - so a 1GB card in Crossfire with a 512MB card will only be able to use 512MB total. Sort of like going RAID with a 250GB and 500GB drive - on the second drive, you lose half your usable space.

The problem with most of those cards was the fact that the larger capacity chips used for the GRAM tended to have much higher latencies than their lower capacity siblings. If this card has good memory timings, there will only be performance increases.

In terms of crossfire most ppl forget that if a game supports it, it's going to use more memory because its going to use more power as a result. Power + performance needs more memory and for high resolutions 512mb isn't enough.

This would be most ineffective at resolving anything. No one said this was "Crossfire Only" I said that the 1GB would not be wasted on a CF setup. That goes for Trifire and Quadfire as well to varying degrees. People who go for those setups usually have high resolutions and larger texture demands..... Now if you have a CF setup and a 1024x768 resolution that's something else.

Not that it has anything to do with the 4850s... But to answer the other question; If you pair a 512MB card with a 1GB card it will use the 512MB. Similarly if you have a 600Mhz core and a 550Mhz core both cards will run at 550Mhz.

Not in CFX. CrossFireX allows the cores to run independently and assigns the faster core a larger portion of the screen to render. I think ATI is working on a way for CF to let cards of different sized memory to allow the one with more memory to make use of it during rendering.

Well you can tell it's been a while since I owned an ATI card Crossfire X is the triple and quad arrangement one right?

A. In this scenario, overall performance will be adjusted to match the memory speeds and engine clocks of the lower clocked card. To obtain ideal performance, graphics cards should be paired correctly.
