Build Suggestions please.

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
I'm looking at spending about 800 on parts for a decent gaming rig and then money for Vista and a 19" LCD monitor. I can't decide between an E8400 or a Q6600, an ATI HD 3870 or an NVidia 8800GT, and then whatever mobo for ATI or NVidia.

I'm leaning toward this build

E8400 => $210
2GB DDR2 800 ram => $65
ATI HD3870 => $175
Cheaper Mobo => $100
250GB HD => $50
DVD Burner => $30
Mid Tower Case => $70
500W PSU => $50

But I have no idea which parts or companies to go with right now. Are those prices within reason?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136038 => Mobo any good?

Drop that ram and go for this 2x2 1000 kit for only 10$ more.

when is the CPU's price drop?

Is a 9800GTX (G92) worth getting instead? They are only $200 now also, is it a matter of which games you'd rather play as one performs slightly higher than the other in specific games?
post #6 of 12
I would hold up because the 9800GTX+ is coming out very soon and it is rumored to be right around that price range and have a little bit better performance. If you'd rather not wait a 9800GTX wouldn't be a bad choice and neither would the new ATI 4850. Newegg has the Asus 4850 for 200$ with a 30$MIR dropping the price to 170$.

Thanks, I'm not rushing out to buy this right away. Build will probably be done around late August, I'm just searching right now to see what's up with the market.

Well good luck with the build! Stick around to see the new cards come out and you shouldn't be disappointed by the end!

By late august GPU prices should drop more due to the price war between Nvidia and ATI. Also, Intel is coming with the Nehelm (sp?) CPUs, so current LGA775 CPUs should drop.
Also, IMO, Q6600>E8400, unless all you do with your computer is game.
