He went to harvard and dropped out. Created a code based OS called MS-DOS. Got the major companies such as IBM etc to use his OS. He sold it to a few companies for $50.

Sir Alan Sugar who owned Amstrad was all about hardware. If he couldn't touch it he wouldnt pay for it. Amstrad was also the leader computer manufactor, Gates sold DOS to amstrad and it took off. It got on almost every computer out there.

He then went on to his dream. To get a PC in every home. What did he do? Exactally that. He created every version of Windows, drove it into the mass market, became to market leader and pretty much dominated the OS market.

He realised that people need something graphical to work with. he put all his money into it and released Windows with a GUI. That took off exceptionally fast, why? Because software is free to make. Hundreds of thousands of other companies started creating software and sold it, they made it for MS since it was the market leader. It became the most popular OS and raked in $5mill a day profit for Gates. he then thought, hey. Why do we need to do all these calculation and letters on paper, and they released Office. it pretty much killed Lotus.

Granted in the past 5 years, not a great deal has happened. They came out with XP which you will probably find on every system if it isnt running vista or osx or linux. They also created the Zune, Surface. They do alot more than you think. Hell, they even made there on games console and they made there own PCB for the graphics card. I know Sony do a much better job at it and have beeen doing for years and the PS3 would be where it is now even if mircosoft DIDNT release the 360.

Now, if that isn't revolutionrey (sp?) then I dont know what is. Coz, I doubt you would be sitting here on Overclock.net if it wasn't for Microsoft

Even if you ignore the dozens of actual products that google has - they still do much more for the internet than M$ ever has. If not for google we would not be on OCN right now - because OCN makes its money from google ads. The internet runs on search engines and ads - and both are areas in which google is dominant.

Microsoft has never been innovative. Microsoft did not write DOS, IBM did. Microsoft did not pioneer the WIMP interface (Window, Icon, Menu, Pointer) that defined the early Windows GUI, they stole it from Apple. Microsoft did not pioneer office suites - they developed in response to Lotus. Microsoft did not pioneer mp3 players - they did it in response to the ipod. Microsoft did not pioneer consoles - they did it in response to the PS2. Microsoft has been an incredibly efficient business machine, but don't confuse that with being innovative

He's not egocentric, he's hands down crazy. He needs to be fired and replaced with someone who is an even bigger bad-ass.

That's true, but wasn't it the xbox's xbox live service that mainstreamed online console gaming? I give them credit for that if it's true (and so far as I know, it is true). But my question was in response to ballmer's question: what, in the past 5 years (the time table microsoft laid out) has microsoft innovated that gives them the right to talk crap about Google's single successful product?

Not to harang on microsoft but Didnt Xbox live lead to Games for Windows Live which if you dont have Xbox live ( I do ) you have to pay to play games online.

You guys need to READ THE ARTICLE. He said "one product that MAKES ALL THEIR MONEY", not "one product total".

And it isn't the search engine that makes all their money, it's Adsense.

I'd like to know what microsoft has revolutionized in the past 5 years.
The Blue Screen of Death.

Now it comes in Eye-popping 3D!!!

What he says is absurd.......but rabidgnome229 do you truly believe that MS hasn't ever been innovative? I understand that you're not the biggest MS fan, but c'mon....that's just ridiculous.

I stand by what I said. They are an efficient business machine and very important in the history of personal computing, but they are not an innovative company. If you believe that they are I would love to hear some examples.

If Ballmer is gonna rip on Google for being a 'one-trick pony', he better make sure his search engine is worth something.

Cause right now it ain't.
