Thinking about coming to the other dark-side...

Thread Starter
With the release of the GTX series and the ATI 48xx series...Im considering jumping the ATI ship for my next-gen card...

What I see is that while the GTX 280 is, appearently, an AMAZING card, the 4870 (Or whatever the highest-end single-GPU card is) will compete just fine, at a fraction of a cost.

Now, Im the kinda guy who likes to have as much Graphical Processing power possible, but if it means going with a card that is slightly slower, but at a fraction of the cost - Im bought!

So please, "Red Tide", gimme the facts, and persuade me

Both sides are good, just 1 side will alyways be a better at a time from how it looks ATI right now have massive performance for the money so thats why I'm going with them, But Nvidia is also fighting back with the 9800GTX+ and lowing prices, so we'll have to wait and see how the 4870 and 4870X2 perform before choosing which is better at this time.

I definitely think for the money, it can't be beat. With the posted performance reviews with the older drivers, it pulled some pretty good 3dmark points--don't remember the review site at the moment though...I can try to dig it up later. And rumor is with the newer driver fix to be released, performance will allegedly increase noticeably. The thing is, the price-point for the GTX200's is MAJOR OUCH!!! I'm with the OP--for the money, my next card (if I upgrade soon) will definitely be an ATI 4k series, hands down--I just hope ATI doesn't decide to be lax on their competitive pricing and raise prices 'cause they see everyone jumping ship from Nvidia...

Well, if you want a graphical powerhouse, and don't mind dual gpu set-ups, go with a crossfire 4850. It'll cost you about 400+tax and beat out a GTX280 in most situations. The only issue is its crossfire, and as with SLI, both have games they don't work well, or at all on.

I would probably still wait till the 4870 comes out and see how that benches. It does look like it could compete against the GTX280 at half the cost XD
