It COULD be. I still don't think that's going to be powerful enough...but when you need a gaming fix, its worth a try, right? Lol. I hope you get it sorted out though . Or even better yet...get that 8800 installed in there!

drivers didn't fix it,i'm gonna try with my dad's 8400gs.
the 8800gts will run with the psu but i think it's gonna fry because it has 18A on the 12v line, the 8800gts requires 26.

There are many reports of this error. So far I've seen multiple ways to fix it and there are probably other possibilities. This issue is primarily appearing in Vista machines. Below are some of the solutions I've seen - if you've had this problem please add your solution to this thread so we can start identifying the pattern.

First Steps
* Make sure you used the DirectX 9.0c that came with the game. It is a newer version than is available directly from MS.
* Update all of your graphics and sound drivers. I just noticed Nvidia released a new driver today!
* Try a reinstall - this works in a lot of situations.

Solution 1
From Activision support - There are some issues running CoD 4 multiplayer on some onboard sound cards. Users with RealTek(TM) onboard sound cards and Windows(R) Vista should try removing their sound card drivers and allow Windows Vista to install it's default sound drivers. Please make note of the make and model of your sound card prior to removing it in order to aid in reinstallation at a later date.

To remove your sound card drivers do the following:
* Open the control panel link from the start menu
* Check the programs and features tool to see if your sound card drivers are listed here
* If they are not open the system tool in the control panel
* Click on the device manager task on the left
* Locate your sound card in the list, it should be in the sound, video, and game controllers section
* Right-click on the video card name and select Uninstall.

Users with Sigmatel® onboard sound cards need to install all Windows® Vista updates, and the latest Sigmatel drivers from www.dell.com. Please navigate from the dell homepage to support, your make and model computer, and look for a sound card update.

If you are running the game from a secondary partition, download the latest BIOS updates from your motherboard manufacturer in addition to following the above instructions.

Solution 2
Some users with Athlon XP instead of 64-bit are running into issues with the latest Miles file which are incompatible. Despite XP not being in the Min specs for this reason, you will still be able to play the demo by copying the following file into your Miles directory and replacing the newer mssmp3.asi with the following older mssmp3.asi used in older games such as Call of Duty 2.

Download: mssmp3.asi.zip ( http://www.infinityward.com/mssmp3.zip )

Note: Please only do this is you are using an XP version not a 64-bit and are having problems. Not needed for users not having this specific issue.

To do this, simply go to your install directory, where the game files are, now copy/paste this mssmp3.asi into the folder. It will prompt you letting you know this file already exists and asking if you want to replace it. Choose to replace it.

This should resolve the issue with Athlon 2600+ XP instead of 64-bit as the XP do not support the latest Miles version we're using.

Solution 3
Some reports that xfire and Teamspeak are causing conflicts. Test the game with these turned off.

Well now...THAT EXPLAINS A LOT!

I was wondering why my old Athlon XP rig couldn't play it. AXP 2800+, 2GB DDR, 7800GS AGP card. Now that makes sense!
