GTX 280 vs 9800 GX2

Thread Starter
I have not seen any reviews that consistently place the GTX 280 above the GX2. It comes close in most cases, which is amazing seeing as the GTX 280 is a single GPU card and the GX2 is a 2-in-one card. A single GPU coming close to beating a 2-in-one makes me wonder why they didn't just go ahead and make a "GX2 280".

The price for the GTX 280 is really high, but then again, I paid a total of $600 for the GX2 I had (not all at once though because I paid $350 for a GTS 512 when it came out and then did a step-up to the GX2). Anyway, with performance being "close enough", I can't see why the GTX 280 is $650 upon release. I just see that as silly.

Anyway, although the GTX 280 is "close enough", it still isn't beating the GX2 all the time, and in fact it rarely does. I would rather right now do a step-up to the GX2 again (or eBay my card and buy a GX2 for $450). I LOVED that GX2, and it tore through games like a hot knife through butter. Except for Crysis, because Crysis is designed to piss us off.

What is the point of the GTX 280? Likely because they want to have 2 flagships in one year to keep the top rank as far away from ATI as possible. OR maybe because they know that if they release a high-end video card people will of course ***** about it but will still but it.

I want to see a "GX2 280", because if a single GTX 280 comes close to matching a 9800 GX2, imagine what 2 GX2 280's could do.

Anyway, I am a bit disappointed by the GTX 280, but I am still in love with the 9800 GX2.

GTX280 is a GX2 squished into one card pretty much.

This is how I see it: The GTX 280 was supposed to beat the 9800GX2. However because of its massive size yields were crap and core clock speed targets were missed causing it to underperform.

I plan on getting 3 total I have one already but havent installed it as I am still awaiting to see what invidia says about my step up, I might just return the 280 or go through with getting three, but review after review is showing that I should keep the 9800 gx2..

I had the same dilema..at the end i bought the 280.

http://en.expreview.com/2008/06/18/r...rce-gtx-280/5/

the 280 has a 4% better performance. and an even greater one once your playing with 30inch screens and bigger.

Further more your limited to a maximum of only 2 * 9800gx2

will with the 280 you can put 3.

Put all this in mind the future drivers are bound the increase the gap further.
How much further is the question.

My opinion: if you got a bigger screen starting from 30 inches or more with very high res get the 280. And also if you are planning in the future to Sli 3 of em

If you got a smaller screen then 30 inches. and your not really going to SLI more then 2 cards in the future, cause that is your limit with the 9800gx2.Then i suggest you stick with it.

Other wise the 280 really dosnt blow away the 9800gx2 as everybody expected. And on larger screens with the highest resolution the 9800gx2 is left behind by about 10%.On smaller screens with high res the 280 can just about keep up if not fail in some bench marks if not all.

For the future its got to be the 280.

1:future driver updates will increase performance
2:not limited to sli only 2 GPU's
3:bigger screen and higher reselution have alot better results
4:Its only one GPU , meaning direct data transfer.

But only if you dont have screen bigger then 30 inches. And you looking for performance then the 9800gx2 , even better the black edition is the way to go.

----------------------------------------------------------
i will post later on some off reviews that i have bumped into.
---------------------------------------------------------

280 beats the 9800gx2 flat out on big screens with high res. Thats all.
Lets see what the new drivers do......

Still poor release by XFX they should have improved the 280 more.

Start turning AA up in the higher resolutions and you'll see why the GTX is a more powerful card.
There are games that the frame rate will be lower with the GTX, but the gameplay will be smoother.

2560 * 1600 your 9800 gx2 is dead .

Bigger screen and higher reselution is the key. wait till the driver updates...

edit : http://www.vr-zone.com/articles/NVID...ew/5881-9.html

still can be pushed further with oc
