Gaming Headset

Well, my Steelsound 5Hv2 headset recently bit the dust, and without a thought I was about to order a new pair, but then I decided to wait and try to make the best decision. Basically, my problem is that if I buy something online, returning it is a big hassle, a hassle I really don't like to deal with. So, if I buy something, and I don't like it, I am stuck with it.

One of the things I am considering is the Creative Fatal1ty Headset. At first I laughed at this Fatal1ty branded junk, but seeing that this headset is used by the CGS (Televised gaming league) and after reading some reviews, I think it may be even better than my Steelseries ones.

The main purpose I will use the headset for is games. The Steelseries headset I had claimed to be "optimized for games," and it showed. I could hear footstep sounds in CS:S very far away and be able to pinpoint exact locations. I want any other headset I get to be able to do that for me. I am the kind of person to buy into hype, so if something is popular I will probably go for it. But just because its popular doesn't make it good. I bought a Razer Barracuda HP-1 headset at a CompUSA going out of business sale and I think its garbage. I also am temporarily using this Zalman headset until I get mine replaced, and it too sounds like junk.

So, anyone out there that has the Creative Fatal1ty headset, I have a few questions. First off, do the ear pads go on the ear, or around it? I really can't stand headsets where the ear pads go on your ears... they just don't feel as secure on your head. And secondly, do you like the sound quality on them? Just for gaming.

Any other headsets you would recommend would be nice as well, as long as they are not actual headphones, because actual headphones sound bad for games, but are good for home entertainment, etc.

ExtremeTech raved about Astro A40.

Yeah, I saw ads for those, and I have to admit they are pretty sexy for a headset... but the Fatal1ty headset is like $200 cheaper.

Well, like I said before... I had a good laugh at this Fatal1ty stuff when it came out, and swore to myself never to buy it. But after seeing the decent reviews its getting, along with the sub-$50 price tag, I'm sure that its worth a shot. But I don't have the kind of money to think like that, so whatever I buy will have to be what I will be stuck with until it breaks or whatnot.

you and the other senior audiophiles may kill me... but i'd still go for ATH-A500 with Zalman Clip on mic.

I think the money spent will be worthwhile if it's a good one. Since the headset is used in cgs and endorsed by Jonathan Fatal1ty Wendel, I don't think it will be any bad.

I actually recently just went on the CGS IRC channel and asked djWheat, and he said that the headset they use is actually not the Fatal1ty one. It is actually some $700 Sennheiser Broadcasting headset with Fatal1ty stickers on it.

I would probably just be better off buying another 5H.
