8800gt SLI is no way better than the gtx 280, plus u can 3 way SLI the gtx 280 later on when the price drops.

Not everyone has $2k to spend on VIDEO CARDS let alone their entire PC! From a price/performance standpoint, 88GTs in SLI destroy a single GTX280.

I am at 1680x1050 primary and 1280x1024 seconday. I game on the 1680x1050 and display temps, usage etc on the other screen.

Upgradability right there, the price will come down in a month/two when Nvidia figures out that 1 GTX 280 is roughly the same performance as 1 4870 but a bit more expensive, and a new ATI card is coming out in August, so more pressure for Nvidia.

Note that Takendown2 said 'later on when the price drops.' Although right now you would be correct.

If I were to get the GTX280 option, I would buy one, then another and then another.

Oh and I just checked a review of the Monsoon II Lite and I see what your talking about... but the main difference between the Monsoon and the Freezone Elite is that the Feezone Elite is a built in TEC Water Cooling Loop whilst the Monsoon is still a heatsink. I think that is the key difference in difference between the two.
Thanks anyway!

i know i'm late to the party in answering this comment, but i think you're a bit off... in single card to single card comparisons, no, but SLI the 8800GT's as compared to a single GTX 280, it's a different story.

in Crysis, the 8800GT SLI combo wins
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=11

and again in CoD4
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=12

and again in Assassin's Creed
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=14

same in Bioshock
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3334&p=17

Thus, in 4 of the 7 tests, the 8800 GT SLI combo beat out the GTX280, most of those tests being at 2560x1600, which is, of course, more demanding than 1920x1200... IMO the case is closed - an 8800GT SLI combo would be best.

oh, and ty for the rep

Your welcome. But now I think I have started this conversation a bit TOO early. It now seems that the 4870x2 (as some people have started calling it) is due to be released in August and from what I have read it seems capable of beating the GTX 280 which in turn will lower prices. There is also something about a GT200b, a 55nm version of GT200.

Choices, choices, choices, but this time it's all for the better. (At least for consumers)

So now it seems that the question is:

CPU or Graphics upgrade?

lol, Nvidia are letting ATI move before countering with a better card.

looking at your current rig i think it would make most sense to get another 8800GT for SLI... but that's just me... and if you like, perhaps a bigger monitor? or a second one
