Need help upgrading on old AGP rig

Thread Starter
So right now I have an x1650pro DDR2 512 from HIS and it is doing ok. I can run COD4 decent, and css real good. I have a nice 22inch samsung monitor, but i want to be able to have COD4 run a little more smooth and have it look nice as well since i have this nice monitor.

So here are a couple questions I have been wondering about before I commit and buy my last video card for this rig:

1. Is 256 of DDR3 faster than 512 of DDR2? And why?

2. I have a 350W power supply in my old rig now. If I get lets say a x1950 or a 3850, would I still have enough power to supply the card? (I have all un-necessary other components disconnected from the power so it can run better, ex. CD drive)

3. What would you all recommend? I want to stay with ati because I like their products. So what ATI card would be worth me spending $100 or less to get me through say the next 6 months to a year?

Thanks

The volume and speed of video RAM is a quirky thing.
GDDR3 is faster than GDDR2
The oddity is more volume isn't always better and its dependent on the video cards memory bus, so there are some quirky variables there.

The PS, it should have at least about 24a on the 12+v to sustain a power dependent video card.

If you're only playing COD4 and CSS, you should be able to get away with a x1950. But with prices what they are, you should be able to find a 3800 card for not much more than a x1950 would cost you. I also saw a 3870 going for $100 in the for sale forums, so if your budget stretches that far, you might go for it.

From 1 754er to another, I do think you need to look into a whole computer overhaul. It seems like that rig is not doing justice to your monitor.

just found this on tigerdirect. good value? it has 512 of ddr3 and its an XT model.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0059&CatId=318

any drawbacks for it being a 2000 series? whats the difference between the x1000, 2000, and 3000 series cards?

Should handle COD4 and CS easily.

Stays cool so you can OC a wee bit.
Also you have enough power too

Sold?
