A Conundrum of Sorts.

So, I have been having problems with my PC randomly shutting itself off and have run out of ideas to the cause of why, any information to helping this problem would be appreciated, but first some things I have tried. (Rig info is in sig).

- Cooling is fine, it shuts off both during load and idle, all fans work and temps are within an average range (around 30C idle, 45C load)
- Mobo is new, my roomate upgraded and I swapped his old s939 board for mine, problem still present
- PSU is somewhat new, but problem has occurred on both this psu and the one before (speedfan logs show no fluctuations in voltages beyond average when shutdowns occur, assuming it's reading accurately)
- I tested the CPU by swapping it with a 4000X2, still happened
- It's not software related, has happened across numerous reformats (unless it's a virus which has somehow found it's way to the flash rom, but I doubt from the randomness of the shutdowns and the fact that I've never encountered one of these in the wild)
- Happened on both my old gpu (x1800xt) and new one
- There are no lose screws/wires causing a short on the motherboard (Past mistake I learned the hard way to thoroughly check for)

Honestly, I'm stumped. Perhaps it's just gremlins telling me to finally upgrade to a new architecture.

There could be tons of problems... The motherboard could be dying, along with the power supply.

However, since you swapped mobos, and it still happened, I think it could be your power supply. Try another unit and see if the problem persists.

Yeah, I'll be testing with a backup PSU tomorrow, was looking for any other suggestions for things I haven't heard about.

Like I said I've done a lot of testing, including the actual power socket from the house just to make sure it wasn't faulty.

Update:

Ram passed memtest with 0 errors.

I tested the PSU by swapping it with a cheap case one that was laying around, I then put the original one into a backup system to see if it would cause any shutdowns.

Oddly enough, both have been on for the last 24 hours with no restarts, which just makes this all the more perplexing.

I was going to say the PSU is the culprit although after reading that I'm not sure...

If you're sure it's not the PSU then I'd say it's probably the motherboard.

Motherboard was replaced during testing.

I have another to test it but honestly don't want to get into triple redundancy tests yet.

I'm starting to think maybe the PSU was underloaded on the 3.3/5v rails causing the shutoffs. Atleast that's the only thing I can come up with.

Sometimes a bad sector on the HDD can also trigger a system shutdown.

Another possibility: Software that performs an illegal memory access operation. One prominent example was an older version of CoreTemp. This is not the only program that might cause hard shutdowns, though.

Good luck! Hope you find and eliminate the cause of the shutdowns.

I had a problem with random shut downs recently and I was going crazy trying to find out what it was. Ended up being the power cable that plugs into the PSU-WALL.
