Fear of destruction is highly overblown. I have not built an aircooled PC in quite a while. Test everything out of the case if possible. If not place plastic baggies over anywhere that you need to protect and then cover that with paper towelling and then test run it with the HW off. If you get some water on something it's no big deal...just let it dry and you are good to go.
Even if you get a leak with the gear on 9 times out of 10 yuo will be able to salvage the hardware with electrical parts cleaner.
Yes water is conductive...no you do not want it on your PC hardware...that said it's not really that big a deal.
