TF2 SM 1.0 error

Thread Starter
my buddy has an old p4 mx5300(or some old nvidia card 128mb) system and tried to install the tf2 for freeweekend and gave him the "card must support shader model 1.0" this would be driver download, for him to fix wouldnt it?
Its not a problem with the drivers, it means what it says. He needs a newer graphics card that at least supports Pixel Shader 1.0.

try doing this.

Right Click Team Fortress 2 in the steam menu.
Click properties, then Set Launch options
and put

-dxlevel 70

then hit Ok.

This make it so the game runs in DX7 rather than DX9.
I don't know if this will let it run but it's worth a try.

that's a WAY old card...

Shader Model revisions are hardware dependent: he'll have to upgrade if the above idea doesn't work... my X600XT refused to play Assassin's Creed and i saw only a black screen 'till i swapped in my 8800GT

DX7 cards don't support pixel shaders, so if it'll run with that command ^^ it might well work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shader
according to wiki, (click: see also), SM1.0 starts with Direct X 8, the Ati Radeon 8500 and the Geforce 3 series. Anything older than that (or the horribly misnamed GeForce 4 MX) won't support SM1.0

If it's not working, then either the card doesn't support SM1.0 (the last card I had that was a DX6.0 level S3 integrated).

Might be that the card drivers arent installed correctly, check that the card is being identified in windows and works ok elsewhere. Does sound like a Geforce 4 MX if it's 128MB though. Shame, cos I remember the back of many a games box had a 'not supported' section for those cards.

EDIT: There was a Geforce PCX 5300, which would support DX9b, but more commonly 8(The FX series is what Valve were slagging off when making HL2, they made it default to DX8 for better performance). If that's right, a weak card, so DX 7 it if you can.

Sorry man the gf4 mx series is dx 7
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...Force_4_series

So it wont support SM 1.0, but any other card will like even a gf3 since it has dx 8.0, or any ati equlivant.
