Thats a very good point. I have a 8800 ultra, and a 8800gt folding now. I would hate to get stuck with another 8800 if the points go down.

Is the point distribution something they're likely to change? This news is dated, but it still seems pertinent:

Quote:
With new revisions to the GPU2 core code, the GPU2 code is doing more science per ever in the same amount of time. In the spirit of having the points equate to how much science is being done, we are going to increase the PPD of the GPU2 benchmark machine (ATI 3850 board -- see the FAQ for details) to 1500 PPD. We will revalue the most recent WU's (472X) and all future WU's will use this new PPD for benchmarking.

[SOURCE]

Perhaps GPUs truly have much more computational power through parallel programming than CPUs?

If they change the point distribution is that typically retroactive?

-Off topic-

I had intended to run my GPU2 client all day, but a silly storm developed and stuck around for a good 3-4 hours(I always unplug all my major electronics/comp HW)... My question for the HC folders, do you guys leave you folding farms running even in inclement weather?

Im not hc but I dont leave mine running during storms. Its not worth blowing a few grand of computer parts plus the downtime that it would cause.

I agree 100%... I don't even leave any of my electronics/computers plugged in let alone running. However, I've realized some folders are 110% hardcore, and I was curious if they would actually risk it.

Where I live in AZ, we don't have bad storms, just very little ones. So to answer your question, I leave the farm on all the time. Just like the mail, my w/u's get delivered sleet - snow - or shine.

All I can say is... time to buy me some new video cards that arn't 500 dollars. Then throw those things in SLI. That is the same price I got my 8600 GT's for. :|

Yeah, though even through a storm. I run a linux server, so I normally have to keep it on. Since my SMP client is on that, then I just leave it on with it.

Though it is an HP Machine, and I am not to worried about any of that downtime.

However, my actual gaming rig, I either unplug, power down, or leave it running depending on the severity of the storm. If it is a hurricane, I usually just move them up to the attic or my bedroom.

I wonder if my insurance would cover something like that. Hm...
