SATA DVD writer problem *URGENT*

HELP!

I installed windows XP professional a few days ago and then I installed all my games and programs. Today, I tried to burn a DVD using TMPGenc Version 3.1.2.176, but it gave me an error stating that it couldnt find a usable DVD writer in my system.

What can I do? I went to the lite-on website but there is no driver for windows XP; only firmware.

The drive is detected in windows xp and I can play DVDs using the drive. Only thing that bothers me is this: I have tried using other burning programs and they work, but 90% of the time I get a "closing track" error.

This drive is a brand new SATA LITE-ON LH-20A1L SCSI burner.

NOTE: In device manager it states that the DVD burner is a CDrom device. Could that be a problem?

Do I need a driver for windows XP? Just to let you know, I used it in Windows Vista x64 with NO problems. Only reason I went back to windows XP is b/c I get WAY better performance in games!

PLEASE help me!

Thanks,

Nathan

wrong spot to put this..... but, have you tried to reinstall the drivers that came with the DVD drive, and seen if there is a difference??

dvd drives don't come with drivers, only burner software.

secondly, a number of nvidia boards have had issues with SATA DVD burners.

It is typically resolved with bios updates.

Do you have the most current bios version?

Also, many dvd drives have firmware updates available. I know my plextor drive had 3 firmware revisions released that fixed various thing.s

Nvidia Chipset on your Mobo?? If so its a pretty common issue with Nvidia chipsets that they do not for some reason get along with most SATA optical drives. I see it all the time here at the shop. Though in most cases it leads to BSOD's or not even being able to install windows in the first place. This very well could be the cause of your issue, I'd try using an IDE drive and see if the same problem exhist's.

Happened to me heres How i fix

Remove the DVD drive when computer is off, turn on computer, let it sit for ~10 minutes to sort out whatever it needs (depending on how many background things are happening)... Turn off computer, reinsert DVD drive....

If this doesn't work, do the same thing except before removing it, go to device manager and see if you can find it (it might be listed as SCSIdrive) and uninstall it

Lastly: Use a different port, will reset the configuration data for the drive

Remove the UpperFilters and LowerFilters value.

a. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.).

b. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key.

c. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key.

d. Expand the "Control" Key.

e. Expand the "Class" Key.

f. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

g. High light this key by left clicking once on it.

h. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete".

Then unistall / reinstall the burning software.

seems to me like the tmpgenc isnt familiar with the drive itself, like when you use nero theres a drive database or even roxio. oh and it doesnt depend on another softares info, for example i amlso use dvd shrink but it wont burn dvd's unless you already have nero installed because it uses the nero plug in or something hope this helps
