AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100+ 1.74 GHz

Thread Starter
My friend has the processor in the topic, AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100+ 1.74 GHz, he has stock cooling, it's a pretty bad processor and it's bottlenecking his FPS like crazy. Anyone have any suggestions? He has a Asus A7N8X mobo, is this overclockable? And if so, any good clock speed to aim for? Thanks!

You won't get much out of it... Locked multi... My XP 2800+ will only take about 200MHz faster then stock and gets hot.

He's got a very good motherboard for socket A overclocking, though as BlankThis mentioned I'm not sure how much you'll be able to coax out of the CPU. The Thunderbird cores were abysmal overclockers, Bartons were much much better.

So it's not even worth OCing? Better off just buying a new CPU? He's sort of on a short budget, and the perf is needed, so OC is really possible?

I used to have 1 they will not overclock at all. Mine had a cheap rosewill cooler with a 92mm fan and it got hot when overclocked and would re-start

I remember my old XP 1800+ (Thoroughbred). Clocked to 2.2GHz. That was so fricking awesome.

If I remember correctly, XP 2100+ where either Palominos or Thoroughbreds, the latter being a decent overclocker (my XP from above).

@ OP: Since the chip has a 266 FSB, you could try upping it to 400MHz (if the mobo can handle it). Use a divider for the RAM, unless you got some PC3200, in which case you could run 1:1. Those chips rarely went over 2.4GHz, so don't go crazy with it (2.2-2.3GHz should still be withing reach thought). And remember to not go over +0.3V on the vcore.

Edit: Stock cooling won't allow for much. I wouldn't go any higher than +0.1V with it.

No point buying a new Socket A CPU but if you can the XP 3200+ is pretty good at OCing, I've heard.

Only certain mobos were compatible with those chips. He needs to make sure the board in question recognizes the chip. Awesome CPUs though. Unlocked multis and lower vcore; was able to get 2.4GHz on mine with an NF7-S board (good times back then).
