8600gt (First time overclocker)

Thread Starter
Ok first I am a NOOB... So be clear and detailed (I am also a little slow so try to keep it simple).

I have an XFX 8600gt 512mb DDR2 (or is it GDDR2) and Currently I have overclocked to 687\\1511\\450 (core\\shader\\memory) btw 540\\1188\\400 is stock. It underload temps maxs @ 73* and idles around 50*.

I used Riva Tuner to set this overclock and ATITool to test it... If I increase any part I start seeing yellow dots (please give me a term for that) in ATITool Artifact Scan... However ATITool does not register an error (ATITool is set to find smallest artifact). Are Yellow dots an artifact?

My questions are:
Is there a way to increase to get more from this card?
What is the term for the yellow dots I get in ATITool Artifact Scan?

Yellow dots are indeed artifacts.

You could try voltmodding it, but it's a hardware mod and so really only if you really want to go to that hassle and risk.

People have got cores upto 1GHz VModding it, but I wouldn't say it was worth it, I'll find a link to a guide.

EDIT: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=44216
http://forums.vr-zone.com/showthread.php?p=5202025 is a VM guide for a POV card, but since they're almost all reference design it'll be the same. I'm gonna repeat that I wouldn't advise doing this, but here's some info anyway.

As AntiTalent has posted, those yellow dots are artifacts, your o/c isn't stable. You should downclock your o/c until you don't see those dots.

Thank you both...

Why does ATITool not register them?

Yes I did back it down to the stable point (ie no yellow dots and no errors in 2 hour test)...

So that is it with out an actuall mod?

So I was able to get ~27% on clock and shader and ~12% on memory... Is this an ok overclock? What is considered good/average/bad?

Your doing ok. Just watch your temps. When I was overclocking I had stable speeds but then the next day was a scorcher summer day and things werent so good anymore. Ive gone back to stock settings now.
