MKV, Windows Media Player Classic, and Subtitles

Thread Starter
I'm playing a subtitled video in mkv form, and I can't turn on the subtitles. How do I control the subtitles with the media player? I've managed to play videos with subtitles before.

You can right click on it, and there shoudl be a sub seclection.
It normally puts them on as default though, so there might not be any.

Just press 'S'.

VLC FTW!

If you havn't heard of it, try it. It can be much more useful and easier to use in the long run.

You also don't need to install any codecs, which makes things so much better.

Though you do have to tweak some programs alittle.

Make sure the subs are named the same as the movie. Example: movie is lolcar.mkv - subs are lolmovie.sub, change the sub to lolcar.sub. This way the subs will start by themselves and work correctly.

Pressing S does nothing.

Please elaborate about renaming subtitles, where do I do this?

I'll try out this vcl player, can I get a link? Or do I trust google?

Right clicking shows me the menu, and I see no selection of subtitles. I do see a selection of audio though. Nor can I find a way to turn subtitles off either.

Usually .mkv files have the subtitles contained in the format. I believe that Media player classic can only display subs by itself when it is using VMR7 & VMR9 (renderless) in the output section in options.

Then you can choose the subtitles by right clicking, and going to subtitles.

Or if you don't want to try changing that I would suggest the program DirectVobSub. It's what I always use for subs.

(oh, I also realized what I'm playing isn't .mkv, but I lost the original .mkv ones to one scratch on a disc )

Thank you very much! I had the same problem and changing the renderer worked perfectly.

This might be an old post, but as you can see, it says "Required for loading subtitles"... embedded subtitles work fine even without it. If they don't, then you have a different problem.
