Suggestions for a $500 build??

Needs to include everything - keyboard, mouse, speakers, windows, etc. Except for monitor - that will be outside this budget. I was thinking something like this.

The person I'm building for isn't really a gamer, so onboard video should be ok. I'd love to offer a decent video card to go along with it, but didn't see where I could cut any corners to do that.

that build works dude!, it's perfectly fine to me... you should give them the option of doing hybrid graphics, just incase thats all...if they really plan to play..a board from gigabyte or asus is fine.

All that comes to a little over $400. Just add in your keyboard, Case, mouse etc.

just realized I left off the hard drive - which pushes it to about 550 - not sure how I can get back down to around 500. I like the parts you listed gri3f3r, but add a case, keyboard, mouse, speakers, hd and os and I'm well over my price limit. And excuse my ignorance on this one, but what are "hybrid" graphics and how would I add that capability??

All that comes to $511 without shipping and there are a couple mail in rebates that add up to $40. Let me know if you need help trimming it down a little.

I would say get an e2160 and OC the heck out of it on a P35 motherboard instead of getting an e7200, but that's just me.

When building you'll also need an O/S windows or Linux have you included this in your price mate they cost around £40 - £70 OEM
