Is my system running too hot? - Page 3

Real Temp is 2.60 and CoreTemp is 0.99

In Realtemp I'm getting 42C-45C at stock speeds and depending on how high my fans are set.

Still too hot. Unless 45n chips are supposed to run this hot (pretty sure they're not). And even when I overclock from 2.66 to 3.5, the temperature doesn't move that much until it's underload. hitting 65C in Realtemp. That was fine for P4's, but I'd rather keep this much cooler.

I spent a few hours today destroying my case, cleaning it out and fitting it all back together again. I removed all of the paste from my chip and heatsink using a small see through plastic card (being careful not to scratch either componant) and lightly polished the copper of my heatsink to remove impurities and (I had to, no choice until I get paid) put about half of the removed paste back onto the chip (a little bigger than a grain of rice) and smoothed it on. I removed it gently to see if there were any air holes (like there were before I took it off) and there were none.

So, I'm still idling at pretty much what I was before.

How warm is it in your house?

The Gemini II isn't the most efficient cooler for quads, from what I've read.

The mounting of the cooler with proper TIM application is also key.

Finally, I very much recommend going with Real Temp, which has been extensively tested with 45nm chips to give as close to accurate readings as possible.

CoreTemp seems to read high, so you might be giving yourself unnecessary stress.

I've not a clue to be honest (how warm it is) but I'm in a black room (/m\\) and that makes it nice and warm. My PC is a great source of heat during winter =D

Eitherway, at a guess, it's about 18-20C in my room. Nice and room temperature.

Earlier on when I was messing around I had the door open and running OCCT and kept feeling gusts of really warm air around the time the CPU was at about 64C constantly.

So, you think it may be the Gemini II?

I'm planning on getting an Antec 1200 this payday, too (it's also my birthday soon plus there's a share bonus from work to the tune of, I hope, £225 =D) I was going to migrate to the Antex 1200 and take the Gemini II with me (after applying some more paste). Thus having about 7 fans in total in the PC and I was hoping that would really help cool the PC down a lot.

42C idle is ok for me, for now. But I'm really wanting to get that to about 30C Idle, and then I can overclock to 3.5ghz without a worry. My poor E6600 never reached 45C with the same cooler.

Hmmm...well, I've never used the cooler, so I can only go on what I've seen. Anandtech has a good rep and their review calls it a middle-of-the-road cooler for a quad. The 1200 is a wind machine, that's for sure, so you should find that might help, though your 900 should give you good temps as it is.

I had some temperature issues with my quad and it took several tries to get the application of the thermal paste right and get my temps under control.

I've got the paste smack bang in the middle of the chip and it's all smoothed out with no gaps for air to get into. It doesn't cover the entire chip or copper plate.

I've modded my 900 a little bit, unfortunately. I've taken the front two mounted fans and placed them on top of my Gemini (I was skint) and the one at the back of the case is now on my door blowing on my graphics card.

But,m that said, temperature wans't a problem before.

I know someone who'll have this Gemini off me, so I'm going to buy another cooler, me thinks, along with the Antec (I'll have to put off that 2GB of RAM, I think)

Which cooler is recommended?

Well, there are several coolers, but the king of the air coolers is still the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme.

My recommendation is to keep your case, get the cooler and the RAM and boost your performance. Oh, and get some more fans for your 900. Then you'll have cooler temps and better performance. Then wait on the case until you get the cash together.

Performance over appearance for me

Well, actually.... I was thinking tonight about getting a different case. The 900 is a great case, but it's loud (my parents complain) and very dusty. However, here's my dilemma. The 1200 looks great and has dust filters etc etc, but would be pretty loud with all those fans. I've got osme sound padding I could use with a case without a window. Are there any good cases that provide adequate cooling and sound proofing?

It's a tough tradeoff between air cooling and noise reduction.

You could always look into some nice quiet fans. The Tricools can be pretty noisy (I have the 900 which I use for my secondary rig). I've got the fans turned down low now since it's mainly used by family members and they don't need the overclock (and hence the cooling) that I use on mine.

Another option would be to get some good quality fans with good bearings and get a fan controller which you could use to control the speed and how loud they get.

The P180 is a pretty silent case, from what I've heard, but I don't think it would cool as well as the 900. There are lots of cases out there... you might have to do some searching around and read up.

hey there check these two cases if u plan to get a new case not sure on pricin where you are.

coolermaster cosmos (a bit heavy but sweetly quiet)

lian li v1100 (light weight but also sweetly quiet)

i would recommend either one of these two as i have seen both in workin order.

hahaha to be more honest jus plug a aircon pipe to your rig and all is well now to jus find an aircon hahaha. quiet and cool.

p.s im hunting down a aircon to try this

I don't think there's a problem with my CPU cooler, to be honest. After resitting the sink and using Everest. I'm idling at 32C on stock settings. It's only when I overclock that I get instability. I've heard these Q9450's aren't good for OCing, so I'm going to not even bother OCing it anymore.
