I fried my hard drive - Page 2

in this case i would hook up the HD to another computer if possible. i have a USB to IDE/SATA exactly for this type of situation.

if it fires up in the other computer then its not the HD. best thing to do is isolate the problem and make sure its the HD or not.

Yes, please do this first.

If it is for sure the hard drive, and you REALLY REALLY need that date, as if it is irreplaceable, you can do one of three things:
  1. Look EXTREMELY closely at the power connections and the board, making sure that there is no fixable short visible.
  2. Buy an identicle hard drive and replace the board, power connections, basically everything BUT removing the platters.
  3. Or finally, get a Clean Room and remove the platters. Then park them in the identicle hard drive and fire 'er up!

If you try those bottom two, be sure to make a thread documenting it. It'd be tight.

Care to expand on how I was being a smart ass? Did I say "LOL FAIL" "LOL PWND"? No? Go home. It was fact. His rig can't pull more than 900w.

Maybe that's not what killed his hard drive, just like you hypothesized. Not that you were much help beyond that. In general you were a little too condescending considering this guy is simply asking for help.

OP, elaborate on what exactly you were doing with your computer when the HDD failed.

Agreed.

Seems to me what is important to you is the data; worry about the PSU later, and don't attempt to use it in the interim.

I didn't hypothesize a damn thing.

You shouldn't have overloaded 900w of power.
I told him this. Overloading wasn't the death. That's all I said.

Erm. No. I gave him help. Did I say "LOL N00B YOU DIDN'T OVERLOAD IT" I simply said, there is no way in hell you could have overloaded your PSU.

I've noticed people getting very worked up in these threads. No insult was meant by redsunx, from what I can see. From reading the 1st post it even sounded like enigma thought it was the hdd overloading it to me.

Enigma could have simply said that he knew that it wasn't the powersupply (without any sarcasm), maybe it wasn't intended to sound like that but indeed it did sound like it. (I just came in and read the thread)

Now the thread has almost degenerated into a "who said what? and what did you mean by that?" type argument.

Guys just help enigma, and stop bickering.

I've seen 3 threads in the last couple of weeks turn into a brawl because of misunderstandings like this.

I think we have a misunderstanding here. When redsunx said "you shouldn't have overloaded your 900w of power" I believe he meant "it should not have been an overload problem, its probably something else".

I thought he was being a snartazz for a minute too until I re-read the post. I think the OP thought he was saying something like "thats what you get for overloading your psu" which would have been a useless comment. I think that redsunx was actually trying to help, though he could have added a bit more info to make it clearer.

Thread Starter
I removed the second PSU and bought a bigger Main PSU. Still the same results. Instant power off when I hook up the hard drive. So I gave up on it and bought a velocirapter instead and it works perfect in the same slot. again is it possible to retrieve information from a shorted hard drive. I tried freezing it. that didnt work. I tried the 18 inch drop method. that didnt work either. Thanks guys and no hard feeling I hope.

Enigma, do you have another machine local that you could connect the hard drive to just to see if the drive shows up in POST? Do you mind if I ask how you came to the conclusion that you "overloaded your PSU"? I noticed you had two power supplies so I'm assuming you ran into a problem with one of them. Was the second PSU plugged into your HD?

Let us know

Good luck
