Trying to share a printer

Thread Starter
Just two comps for now, both comps are hooked to a little rinkydink router, so one isnt hooked directly into the internet.

Ran network wizard on both computers and set them up as connecting to the internet through a gateway.

For the computer with the printer connected to it, I set the printer to be shared.

So when I go to add printer on the other one I type in //MSHOME/Printer2
and the message I get is

"Windows cannot conntect to the Printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly,or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server"

On the remote computer I can see the MSHOME network and on the local I can see the remote computer, so the network is good. But I dont see the printer.

It is a HP PSC 950 with the latest drivers installed on both comps, and by latest, I mean 2002.

should be \\\\(comp name or ip address)\\Printer2
and you do need to have \\\\ not //
im assuming the computer name isn't mshome but the workgroup is

if problem persists try turning off firewalls

Yeh, I was typing in \\\\ when I was doing it, guess I will try the compname instead, but I think it list an example as \\\\server\\printer, I just assumed it meant the workgroup name.

Still didnt work, and turning the firewall on/off doesnt do anything.

What imone03 should solve your problem. Make sure you are using the computer name though and not using the username that is currently logged in. To get the computer name you rightclick/properties on mycomputer. Also double check all your settings and make sure the printer and whatnot is actually shared.

Have you tried doing something like

"\\\\iphere\\printernamehere"

I currently am sharing my printer through a linux machine and it works fine.

Have you checked to see if there are any networking drivers for the HP Printer? I know there are some for mine, but they are really useless.
Have you updated your drivers?
Have you turned the firewall off on both computers?
Have you disabled AV programs, such as MS Defender?
Have you enabled Printer Sharing on both computers and the printer?
Is Simple File Sharing/Sharing Wizard on? Turn it off! It sucks!

That is all the help I can give for now.

I havent checked for special networking drivers, but when i checked the download section for this printer, there was nothing that sounded like that.

I havent tried both computers with the firewall and AV off, but I dont want to leave them vulnerable just for this printer, unless I just have to turn them off to get the printer shared and then turn them back on.

Yes, both computers are setup for file sharing, I can see the computers on the network that I created so that is all good, and I do have the printer set to be shared, It just cant be seen on the other comp.

On the computer the printer is installed on, run command prompt type ipconfig, once you see the local lan ip (192.168.xxx.xxx). Go to the computer/computers you want to install it open and open run and type \\\\(the ip address of the machine the printer is on) Then you should see the computers shared files and folders and printer, navigate to the printers and right click and hit install, this should install the printer. When you type the machines IP in run if it asks for a password and the machine has no password then you wont be able to get in unless it it password protected.

If you still can't login to the machine, make sure all computers are on the same workgroup also.

ok you turned firewalls off hmm see if both pc's can see each other go on the computer with printer and see if that computer can see your computer and same on the other if it cant see one of the other go to start>control panel>network connections then see if any of the local area connections are firewalled if so disable it and see if your able to see the other computers.

This is teh right answer. The pritner is not a server, and the way a PC shares are printer is very much different from a server. Using network naming protocols won't work until the printer has been isntalled. You can A) insatll the drivers for the printer on this PC B) do the isntall removely as mhsbrian instructed, but either way to share a home printer both PC's need the drivers installed unlike a network printer (that runs a print server).

Well I have been trying to this the whole time with the drivers installed on both computer, but now that you brought up the computer requiring a password.

I was able to do something that asked me for a password(which the computer doesnt have) so it wasn't able to work, but now I guess I need to have a password made for it and then figure out what it was I did that time and do it again.
