[hardocp] 49% of Americans Want FCC to Regulate Internet - Page 2

OK, time to really look at this situation.
First of all, the survey was only conducted on 1500 people. That's 1500 people who had the time to fill out a very random survey. When was the last time you filled out a survey like this?
The posted margin of error was 2.5% with a 95% level of confidence.

25% said they rarely or never use the internet. Then what were they doing filling out a survey?

4% Said they "Weren't sure" if they had a social networking account. You either do, or you don't.

And there's also a problem with question #2, but it directly relates with question #1...

Quote:
1* How closely have you followed recent news stories about a Missouri woman accused in a MySpace hoax that led to the suicide of a teenage girl?

14% Very closely

27% Somewhat closely

30% Not very closely

25% Not at all

4% Not sure

2* The accused woman allegedly set up a fake MySpace account and sent cruel messages to the teenage girl. Should it be a crime to harass a person over the internet?

73% Yes

13% No

13% Not sure
First, about 29% had not followed the story closely, or they weren't sure exactly how close they had followed the story (maybe the same 4% that didn't know if they had a Myspace account?). No big deal with this statistic, I guess.
But the problem that I have with this is here. They asked this question directly after giving very limited detail on what actually happened.

In 2006, the woman allegedly set up a fake Myspace account and posed as a boy who developed a relationship with this girl (this girl went to school with this woman's daughter), and then basically dumped her in a very harsh manner... ending the relationship with a letter saying things like "the world would be better without you". So this girl hung herself.

And you know, I think of this as something that goes way past harassment... it's just a very, very, very sick and cruel joke.

So basically, I just don't think it would be logical for the cops to come at our door every time we harass each other with our AMD vs. Intel wars. Because you know after all the technicalities got boiled down, that's what we'd be looking at.

The internet has been, and should remain free of regulation. That is all.

Oh come on! 49% of 1,500 people? Since when was my friggin opinion determined by some group of 1,500 nazi communists that were probably paid off by the research group?! This angers me. I hate the media and the government all they want to do is take away our freedoms and they are doing it slowly but surely, And no I am not trying to start a flame war I am just stating my opinon.

The Internet is heading towards regulation, simple as that. Regardless of the fact that people can just grow some balls and not kill themselves because of what someone says through a practically anonymous network. More people should be treating MySpazz like /b/ instead of the real people standing next to them. They'd be better off.

The sample represents a subset of manageable size. Samples are collected and statistics are calculated from the samples so that one can make inferences or extrapolations from the sample to the population.

Yeah, that is a pretty small sample size. I'd like to know more about the population they sampled.
