Best AntiVirus with Mini Footprint?

Thread Starter
I want/need a good antivirus with a small footprint... I am willing to pay for this antivirus (freeware would be nice but by no means is that a requirement).

Any ideas?

AVG 8.0 is what we use at work. VERY small, takes almost no resources, and is free!

My personal preference is ClamWin Antivirus.

It's open source, seems to use minimal resources and has received some decent reviews.

Apparently some negatives that have been reported are long scan times (I only schedule virus scans for when I'm asleep, so I don't see this), and the overall aesthetics of the program. It does not have a real time scanner, which may be a large issue for you - you have to manually/schedule scan.

If it does not have real time scanner it should use no resources (other then HDD space) until you make it scan... HMMM this could be just what I am looking for... All email is done as web based and when gaming I don't want anything running... This could be good!

But I also need to look into AVG 8.0!

I've heard lots of praises about Nod32 for it's small footprint. I wouldn't say Avast has a small footprint though. It seems to take up a bit more memory than AVG, but it does have real-time scanning, so there's somewhat of a trade off.

You mean real time protection? Like when you open a file it is scanned? AVG does that!

I recently grabbed Avast since I am tired of Symantec's RVT.exe destroying my computer's CPU cycles. I dont really like how it looks like a media player. Also, when the real time scanning is active, can you close it? Or does it have to sit minimized? Also if you have real time scanning on and you close it, is it running in the background even though there is no system tray icon? Thanks.

You don't ever have to use the actual scanner unless you know there's a virus on your computer already. Avast will scan in the background in real time, so don't worry about scheduling when to scan. I hardly ever need to look at that media player-like skin.
