A crappy Pentium 3 running Clark Connect or IPcop.

No footprint.

Ah, I see. I guess I havent rebooted since I installed Avast. Soon as I did a reboot, avast tried to do a windows kernal (whatever its called before OS launch, but that blue screen that says windows) scan. And the background scanning apps launched when i logged in. Now I just have to see if it kills performance when its running in WoW like Symantec did. Also, does it continually scan files in the background, or only when there are changes (downloads, saves, etc)?

I suggest Avast with another program called threatfire. Basically it is updated more frequently and checks for viruses that your actual antivirus may not be aware of how to scan for yet. Both are free.

i'd toss a vote in for nod32. I've been using it for a few years and absolutely love it. Right now its using just over 3megs of memory when idling in my systray. Just started a scan and its up to 6megs while scanning. Very quick at scanning too, it went through my whole C: drive(17,964 files) in 2 mins 32 seconds. Its normally $30 on newegg, but they send out coupon codes pretty often for $10 off and free shipping
