Power Question

Thread Starter
I have a EVGA 680i mobo with a run of the mill ATX power supply.
The 680i has an 8-pin power connector next to the processor (where the usual 4 pin square one is). Am I able to still use this power supply with this motherboard, or do I have to get a new PSU or some form of insane adapter thing?
Input is really appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help and insight.

Most likely answer is it will be ok.

However, you need to provide specifics for a better answer:
Run-of-the-mill PSU? Which one exactly?
What CPU will you be using?
What are the rest of the system components?

The 8pin CPU power connector is really 2 of the 4 pin connectors. You will be able to run a mobo with the 8pin connector with the 4 ping connector, but using an 8pin plug will supply more current for the CPU. Power supplies are often overlooked, they can take out lots of hardware when they fail, and if you want a stable system, especially if you overclock, you should be getting a brand known for good power supplies.

Its a ~400w (Im at work right now or Id look) Ultra power supply.
The build currently is:
680i motherboard
q6600
250gb Hard drive
2x2gb Gskill RAM
120mm fan (x2)
Geforce 6600

Right now its the bare minimum Id need for it to boot.
I plan on adding 2 more hard drives at some point replacing the geforce 6600 with atleast 1 8800gt.
At that point (upping the graphics card) I would pretty much have to go to a higher wattage PSU (most likely modular) to be able to acccomodate the extra pull.

So from what I gather so far is , I can stick the good old quad connector into one half of that (which side? Im assuming its probably keyed so it wont fit any other way) and have it function?
