I don't even think it will need to be overclocked. Just wait for July or August drivers. The performance gap between the HD4850 and GTX+ is so low that I would be surprised if driver maturation doesn't put the 4850 back on top.

The 9800GTX+ is on pre-release drivers as well, gains will probably be even across the board, if not slightly in the 9800GTX+'s favor.

Yeah, i'll probably leave it on sale for another couple days then take it off. If the cards sell, then cool, i'll put the money toward a 4850, and see how much driver help it. If the palit doesn't sell, then it'll just be the bfg.

In the past Nvidia has generally released at or near the card's max performance.

ATI usually gains ground with each driver release.

The specs of the HD4850 compared to the HD3870 and the performance difference makes me think that something is up with their drivers and it's not pushing the card as hard as it can.

There are a few other changes beside just the die shrink, and ATI has had plenty of time to get drivers ready on these cards since they're not architecturally speaking a huge leap ahead of the HD3k series. Sure, they've got more...well, everything really, but the general core architecture is very similar.

the die has shrank, and the clocks and voltage have changed... That is not enough of a hardware change to expect drivers to be an issue.. especially when it's larger, lower clocked and volted brother has been out for a couple of months... try again please.

Maybe someone should start releasing drivers for volt modders then?

So, did nVidia have to produce the "+" OCed version to... what prove they had to improve performance over the non "+" version for what means...
To out do ATIs lowewr end 4850
To add yet another card to the mix, as usual.

Frankly, IMHO, the "+" is a pathetic attempt to conquer a competitors mid range card

I'm no nVidia or ATI fan boy so don't eve go there!

I don't think this can be a definitive statement yet. AMD has not lifted the NDA on the details of the architecture yet so there's not a lot of "official" details. However, ExtremeTech did have the article up prematurely for a little while before they realized it and took it down. While I didn't get the opportunity of reading the entire article, it does mention that the memory interface has undergone significant changes. The ring bus found in r600 is completely gone in favor of spreading the interface around the edges of the chip. If we're talking about a completely new memory interface, that alters the core quite a bit.

I'm still thinking the drivers aren't quite ready yet, and it's was already said that drivers are responsible for the delay of the 4870X2 (until August). I would assume that the HD4850 would have been included in this driver delay as well, but ATI found that it was performing well enough to compete with Nvidia's offerings (which it was). Either way, we'll find out more info in a week or two once the NDA is lifted.

On the other hand, the 9800GTX+ hasn't undergone as substantial changes and the current driver should be a much better representation of future performance than the current ATI driver.

I wouldn't call the GTX+'s drivers pre-release....the coding for the G80 GPU has been around since WInter 2006. THis is just a die shrink of a die shrink.

and I remember the 9800GTX was the fastest single gpu solution when it was released which was Nvidia's high end single gpu considering the price that it was at launch I guess some companies will milk everything out of their tech to make it one slight step ahead of the low-mid end competition on the market.
