Help overclock my E2160 =]

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
Hi, this is my first build, so please be gentle =] I wholeheartedly accept positive criticism so criticize away!

Basic Specs:
CPU- E2160 1.8ghz (want to see how far I can take this boy for fun, aiming for 3.6ghz)
MOBO- EVGA 780i SLI
RAM- 4x OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 SLI-READY (5-5-5-15)
GPU- 2x 8800GT OC with ACCELERO S1 REV 2 with 2x TURBO MODULES
CHASSIS- THERMALTAKE KANDALF with BUILT-IN LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM (I know this isn't the greatest, but I'm still a newb to liquid cooling)

Issue: I have overclocked my CPU to 3.4ghz, it goes into Windows, and everything appears smooth, but when I run Orthos to test its stability, I get the blue screen of death after about 30 minutes.

CPU temps are low-mid 30s idle, and goes up to high 60s while running Orthos, according to Everest.

I want to figure out how to OC the CPU to be stable at 3.4ghz or even 3.6ghz =]

I don't have any BIOS pics so bare with me as I use other BIOS pics and put in my stats:

Everything as is, but the Spread Spectrum Settings are all disabled

Memory Timing Setting: Expert
tCL = 5
tRCD = 5
tRP = 5
TRAS = 15
CMD = 2T

Advanced Memory Settings all set to auto

FSB - memory clock mode = linked
FSB - memory Ratio = Sync Mode
FSB (QDR), mhz = 1511 (for 3.4 ghz)

CPU Core = 1.5175 (I've heard not to increase it over 1.5V, but I'll need confirmation on this)
CPU FSB = Auto (Upon further review, I think I should set this to a value like 1.4V)
Memory = 2.2 (I think my RAM can go to 2.4 and be within warranty)
nForce SPP = auto (I don't know what to do with these)
nForce MCP = auto (I don't know what to do with these)
HT nForce SPP <-> MCP = auto (I don't know what to do with these)
nForce MCP Auxiliary = auto (I don't know what to do with these)

GTLVREF Lane 0 = +95mv
GTLVREF Lane 1 = +95mv
GTLVREF Lane 2 = +95mv
GTLVREF Lane 3 = +95mv

Any suggestions on how to make my 3.4ghz stable, and even at a lower CPU voltage (if possible?). Or even bump it up to 3.6ghz without incinerating the CPU voltage as well? Also, what is the max temperature for my CPU?

I think what I need to do right now is:
1) Up Memory voltage to 2.4.
2) Set CPU FSB = 1.4

Waht I need help on is to figure out:
GTLVREF Lane 0/1/2/3 settings;
nForce SPP settings;
nForce MCP settings;
HT nForce SPP <-> MCP settings;
nForce MCP Auxiliary settings;
Memory Timing Settings;
Advanced Memory Settings;

Please give me your opinions/advice!

Everest isn't that great from what I've heard.
Also, if it crashes, give it more volts, or if you're already at the max you wish to go, tone down the overclock a bit.

Do NOT NOT NOT go past 1.5v unless you want to replace it in three months.

Thats your max overclock. You won't even see a performance increase to 3.6. And you should keep your RAM at 2.0v unless you HAVE to put it to 2.4v.

Took both of your advices and system is running stable @3.2ghz @ 1.475V. The voltage still seems kinda high, but then again it is like an 80% OC. Not too sure, but thanks for the help.

Any additional feedback? I'll post my specs in the night.

That's good, especially if the rumors I have heard about them OC'ing worse are true.

Have you tested the RAM by itself with Memtest or similar?
Even tho it states on the packet it can run at those speeds i would test it first as it could be ram failing not cpu.
