VCO PLL divider bug 3870x2

Thread Starter
Okay, I have two of these 3870x2's, let my dad borrow one in his rig to play some crysis since I was only seeing a few FPS difference and a few thousand marks. I flashed the bioses on both cards with the visiontek one that I had modded and am now running 850/2088 effective with the fan @ 60%. I keep getting big time problems at anything over 860, which leads me to believe I've got issues, even when reducing the memory speed, GPU seems to cause the issue where Crysis will stop responding and the driver will eat it and recover or the screen will just go black. Either way, would appreciate some feedback from you x2 users! =)

If I remember correctly there is an 860MHz core clock limit on some 3870 X2's. You are correct in assuming it's because of the VCO PLL divider bug. As far as I know there is no BIOS to fix the issue. Unfortunately, the only way to "fix" it is to find an X2 that doesn't have the bug.

Hmmmm that's lame. Thought it was a mere bios fix. I'm running the visiontek "fix" bioses on my cards, which were pertaining to powerplay and fan issues, which I never had a problem with, considering I use rivatuner for fan, and amdgpu clock util for gpu (until I find a stable clock then flash). Think it may be a voltage issue on the board too? Not sure what clocks everyone else is getting, but I would imagine it'd be higher than 860 since it was 825 stock. Memory clock is impressive, and under load it runs no higher than 64ºC @ 55% fan. Had considered the volt mod since it seems relatively straight forward like the 8800gtx v-mod, but would rather not roast this poor thing.

I thought their was a BIOS flash for that 860 limit.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. The Vmod guide says assuming you don't have the bug in your BIOS, then this will blah blah blah. Would be nice to get a definitive answer before I go hacking this thing up.

Volt mods will not work on cards with the VCO PLL divider bug.

The AMD HD 3870X2 graphics processor needs no introduction. However, as some overclockers have already found out, there's no easy way to control voltages to get extremely high clocks out of their $400+ graphics card. Assuming you do not have a VCO PLL divider bug in your card's BIOS (which will limit the core clock to 860MHz no matter what), the only thing really stopping you from reaching 3DMark record books is a pesky voltage problem.

I'm pretty sure the x2's aren't plagued by that bug. I know there was one website that claimed it, but it was a complete fallacy. However, X2's are completely finicky to heat.

Hmmm don't think it's heat, probably just voltage like you guys are saying. Will test some more settings with only one card and see what I can come up with. Volt mod looks easy enough, might give it a whirl, see how far I can push this thing. Only use it for gaming since it draws so much power, makes a ton of noise, and creates so much heat in the room!
