Well I've had it with my 7950GT.. Time for a new card! Suggestions?

For the last 8-10 months is card has been having strange overheating problems.

I'm pretty baffled by it, I've tried adding AS5 to no avail. Whatever though, I'm so over this piece of crap.

So I'm looking to buy a new one.. Looking to spend under 200.. I was thinking about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130318

But any suggestions would be welcomed, also what type of aftermarket HSF to get if any.

HD 4850, with shipping it's $207.

It is the best card in your price range.

Defiantly the HD4850 but since you don't like card the heat up then 9800GTX which is about 10% stock faster then 8800GT and more when oc.

Can you describe the problem?

If you leave everest running (and logging) what is the temperature it is reading?

If the temps are fine and it is artifacting, then I would recommend RMA'ing it, and seeing what comes back before buying a new card.

a 9800GTX is way more than 10% better than the 8800GT.

For the eVGA 9800GTX for 199 at newegg,

you can't go wrong. It will outperfrom both the 8800GT/GTS (the GTS 512 by a bit -- not much, but it will) and the HD4850.

Oh my problem with the 7950 is bizarre.. The max I have seen the card get is around 76C, which should be alright for the card.

But sometimes if I play a game for awhile like tf2, my system totally locks, sometimes I can alt-tab out, sometimes the entire comp is locked. If I restart I have strange artifacts, some letters/Numbers are bold white, where others aren't.

The only way I can fix this problem is to load windows in safe mode, and restart.

Once I had to completely remove the driver, and reinstall it. I've tried multiple drivers to no avail. I'm sick of it to be honest, I have NO idea what the deal is.

The reason I think it's overheating is because I installed a Tornado 80MM right in front of it. It seemed to take care of the problem for a little awhile, but now it's back.

Also I don't mind the heat so much, I just want to know if an aftermarket HSF is necessary for the 4850.

That sound like a card that has an unstable overclock on it to me. That card is good temp wise upto 90° or so. if it does it at stock then it most likely is a bad card that can't handle the stock clocks

That is the part that rings a bell.

POST'ing is done with no real drivers, so software problems are out. You are getting video meaning the card isn't toasted, as long as you didn't flash the BIOS, it isn't overclocked, isn't overheating, and isn't being effected by anything externally.

RMA it, it is dead and artifacting.

Make sure you mention to the EVGA person that it artifacted on start-up, that will be an immediate flag to them that the card is dead-ish.
