Source Engine: Looping Sound Crash

Hey guys,

On all of my source games, when I play them on my lappy, I get random freezes that can last anywhere from 2 seconds to 1 minute, to a point where I have to hard reboot. When it freezes, it keeps looping the sound clip.

Anyone know any fixes for XP Pro SP3??

I know it's a common problem, just wanted to know what you guys think?

I was thinking it was the 5400RPM HDD...

I used to get this on my old pc sometimes. I never did find a solution for it though ;\\.

Its probably some crap code in the source engine, i know valve are working on re-doing the engine for some games (css, dod etc), maybe it will fix it when this comes out, aswell as suposedly adding multi-core cpu support.

The sound looping is a by-product of the freezing, it is completely unrelated to the cause.

Like most peripherals, sound cards have buffers. Your computer writes the sound data to the buffer and the card plays it from there. When the computer freezes it no longer updates that buffer, and therefore the sound card just keeps looping through what's already in there.
