slow gigabit network speeds

Thread Starter
well i have two desktop PC's connected to a switch.

Now both PC's have the same Board and are connected to the same Switch.
the MOBO's both support gigabit lan and the switch is also gigabit. The cabling used is Verified Cat 6.

im trying to move some large files from one PC to the other using Lan, but it seems that the transfer speeds is nowhere near the speed it should be.

i looked at the status of the switch and the connections and both show connections at 1.0 Gbps.

but what's wrong with this picture? it's only operating at 3Mbps.\\

any ideas?

one computer is vista and other is xp (though this shouldn't be a problem)

im looking at transfer details under the dialog and it says it's only operating at 1.5 MBps (thats 1.5 Megabytes per second). That's slower than 100mbps (100 megabits per second).

the theoretical output is 1000/8 = 125 MBps. now i know you don't get theoretical speed but 1.5 MBps is no where near 125 MBps. i should atleast get better than 100mbps (megabits per second) which equates to 12.5 megabytes per second.

Try disabling IPV6.
Try removing Sharing Wizard in Explorer, just like you could in XP Pro.
Try it with a different Gigabit Lan Card, Switch, Cables, etc. Try CAT5E and see if it does the same thing.

Right now, that is all I can think of, get back to us.

I have the same issues when moving files from computer to computer. It's very very slow. I never did find a reason why but would love to know.

Can you tell me if it happens only while you are playing sound? Or does it happen all the time?

Do you have SP1?

Have you decided to change any NIC settings?
Do you have Mcafee?
Have you tried turning off Remote Differential Compression?

well this is what i have done, installed latest drivers, tried different cable, tried different all other equipment .

this is what ended up happening.
it recognizes the speed at 1Gbps, but on the windows resource monitor it it still capped at 100 Mbps. (screenie attached)

now the Transfer speed i have gotten to go up, a little but, but it still does not surpass 100mbps (12.5 megabytes per second). this leads me to think somehow windows is capping it at 100mbps. it fluctuates around 10MB (megabytes) per second. [still not pas 100mbps mark]

@GH0
why disable IPV6?
and why remove sharing wizard?
-without this sharing wizard i dont' think you can see the files shared on the other computer

vista x64 has sp1 installed and the xp pro machine has SP2 installed.

all NIC settings are defaulted, and i looked around in the settings/properties and found nothing out of the ordinary, they are set on auto negotiation for transfer speed. there is an option for 100 Mbps full duplex, but i set it on auto because there is no option for 1000 Mbps full duplex. but i installed the latest drivers for the board, and the board DEF. has Gigabit lan.

If you disable Sharing Wizard, you can still see files/computers on the network.
From what I have seenn IPV6 can slow network speeds. About the Resource Manager, it could just be that it doesn't actually think that you have a 1Gig connection, and just be dividing everything by 10?

What you need to check is, if the file transfer is the same speed when sending the other direction. (Computer A retrieves file from Computer B = xKbps, Computer A sends file to Computer B <> xKbps). If one way is faster than the other, this fix to your vista machine should do the trick. Worked great for me.

Very end of the thread.

You should also check the speed of your hard drive read/write speeds. I've found that that is the limiting factor when transferring files (most of the time)

First thing to do is try something like iperf (dos) or Jperf to see what speed CAN be achieved on the network over the existing hardware, with the existing drivers and the existing settings

If that is a lot faster than you're getting in windows then you instantly know windows is the problem without randomly clicking on a vast array of often eroneous and unrelated things

One thing I have found makes a noticeable difference though is the indexing service. Make sure its turned off on ALL drives, not just the OS drive and the ones your copying to/from

For some reason having it enabled on any drive affects network speed

From a bit of googling though it seems pretty much every version of windows sufferes from REALLY poor network speeds, although win7 to win 7 with RDC turned off seems to get some respectable figures

Kind of makes you wonder whether this is just a clever way to get people to upgrade to windows 7 by crippling all previous operating systems via your update system as the more you update an XP new build the slower the OS seems to get by quite a noticeable amount even on a quite powerful PC
