8800GS or 9600GT?

post #1 of 18
Thread Starter
Which one performs better for the money? I've heard that the 9600GT is around the same as the 8800GS, but which will be better in the long run (as in, I'll keep it for about a year or more)? I'm leaning towards the 9600, but I'd like to be sure before I buy it.

I don't have any experience with either card. I'm currious why you say the 9600GT is better. Can you give me a break down? Difference in performance, o/c ability, and would the price come into play?

Seeing as the 9600GSO is a cut-down version of the 9600GT, and the 8800GS (which is a cut-down version of the 8800GT) is identical to the 9600GSO, logically the 9600GT is the better of the two cards. Having said that, the 8800GT is still a faster card than the 9600GT, due to having almost twice as many SPs.

So, in an order of hierarchy, so to speak, this is pretty much how it breaks down:

8800GS = 9600GSO < 9600GT < 8800GT < 8800GTS, etc

I've used the 8800GS in a build before, and it wasn't that powerful. The only thing that it was better at is overclocking. I put a 25% OC on the card, only upping the fan to 50%..

The 9600GT is the G94 revision of the G92, and I've seen specs to say it's faster.

I am curious to see proof of these claims that the 9600gt > 9600gso/8800gs. I have posted one of my 8800GS/SC's PPD, in the 'F@H PPD' thread... getting 4990 PPD on stock volts and cooling.

I also finished vmod'ing another 8800GS/SC.. final clocks, on stock cooling: 735-core/1902-shader/1910-mem. Should easily produce more than my 8800GT/OC.. still tweaking drivers for final results..will post.

*PS- Since shaders are what perform f@h calculations... isn't it logical that more shaders of the same speed will produce more PPD..?

with only 10-20 dollar difference, i'd say 9600gt is better

Has anyone considered going with the 4850 from ati? Cause a card that beats an 8800gt for $150-$200 seems worth it to me.

Edit: by the way, mine's on its way from newegg
