Call of Duty 4, COD4 Graphics Setting - need explanation

Thread Starter
I'm particularly interested in what Spectacular Map, Glow and Soften Smoke Edges do. I tried enabling and disabling these options on the map Crossfire and I do not see a visual difference.

For Soften Smoke Edges I threw a Smoke Grenade and saw no noticable difference with Soften Smoke Edges on or off.

For Glow I chose Marines and looked down the road towards Spetnaz spawn on Crossfire and saw no noticable difference.

For Spectacular Map I did the same as with Glow and looked down the road towards Spetnaz spawn on Crossfire and saw no noticable difference.

Will lowering Texture Settings improve my fps?

Will disabling Number of Dynamic Lights, Model Detail and Water Detail improve my fps?

The attached pics are my current Graphics settings.

For softening smoke edges, I see like no differences either. Glow is like that HDR effect, go to vacant and look outside while still being inside and you'll see the difference, not hugely noticeable on all maps though. Specular map...you would have to be blind not to see the difference there, equip a Desert Eagle and look at it with and without specular map and you will see the difference. Lowering textures will give you a slight FPS boost and decreased shuttering, but I don't think its enough to make the game look like crap, water detail can improve FPS a great deal on some systems I've heard, water looks bad enough on CoD4, might as well lower it and save some FPS. Dynamic lights and model detail probably don't have a huge impact on FPS either, I would turn dynamic lights to low though, since there isn't a big visual difference. Low model settings make the game look bad also, I'd keep it on high unless you're struggling for FPS.

If you are struggling for FPS, bind the following to a key.

I'll use the 9 key as an example.

/bind 9 toggle r_drawdecals 0 1

That will get rid of a lot of the crap on the maps (posters, dirt etc) and can help gain 10-30 FPS.

not all servers allow it, you can toggle it on and off with that bind if you get a warning.

I read that article already. It helps but not a whole lot because it doesn't explain ALL graphics settings.

Thanks Jacko87, I see the difference now (Spectacular Map) when I equip a Golden Desert Eagle and Golden AK-47. That's one thing I'm trying to get rid of is that HDR effect on Crossfire. When I'm a sniper on either team, I look outside while inside a building, it's so bright outside that I can't see anything.

tUDJ, I'm going to give that a try tonight.

Even with the textures on manual/extra they don't look very good.

Pretty amazing looking game if you consider the engine is based on Q3 though highly modified. Looks like COD5 uses the same engine.

There is a noticable difference with Normal textures and Extra textures.

well I finally was able to play COD4 with full eye candy... and what an amazing looking game.

I averaged mid 65ish fps, drops into the 40ish fps when smoke nads went off and spikes when conditions where right to upper 70s... This is for online play... I have not stopped playing online long enough to go back to single player and see how it looks.
