Does Bus Speed matter when overclocking?

I remember on Socket 939 AMD systems, you had to keep the Bus frequency within a reasonable range of what it was rated at, or else the system was unstable. For that, there was a multiplier.

On my Q6700, I see that it has a bus speed of 1066MHz. Is this something that I need to keep near 1066? Right now my FSB is up to 360, and the bus speed is therefore at 1440 MHz. Could this be affecting my stability?

maybe im wrong cause i gotta 2180 and im sorta a newb at ocn but isnt 360 a 720mhz fsb not 1440?? unless 4 cores has something to do with it idk

2 cores: 360MHz * 2 = 720MHz

4 cores: 360MHz * 4 = 1440MHz

Thanks for clarifying. i learned something today.

definitely could affect stability, you could change your mem divider and then lower the speed, but only really if you wanted to increase the cpu and keep the ram stable that is if it is unstable now or you plan on going further.

AMD systems still have a multiplier that is similar to what you are describing, but I have not seen a likeness to that on the Intel systems. With intel, you pretty much just straight up increase the FSB, with little concern for other multipliers. The only other multi you might have to change is your RAM.

360 is a 360MHz FSB, 1440MT/s FSB. Intel's FSBs are "quad pumped" meaning four transfers per clock. The number of cores is irrelevant, they all share the same bus, single, dual, or quad core.

Anyway, the AMD bus you are refering to is not a FSB, and does not significantly impact the performance of the system. A FSB, like what intel uses, is a major factor in system performance as it connects the CPU to all other system components, the most important of which is the memory.

Yes, a higher bus speed can negatively impact stability, but so can any form of overclocking if done improperly or taken too far. With a locked multiplier, you have no option but to increase FSB speeds to increase the CPU speed.

Frankly, you want a higher FSB speed. Each of the two dies on intel's quad cores communincate with each other via the FSB, and with four cores, the default 1333 bus is already a significant limiting factor.

FSB tolerances will vary from board to board, and I think it will depend on the voltage to the northbridge (commonly referred to as the "FSB"), and is abbreviated in some BIOS as the G(MCH) voltage (I think). Generally increasing voltage to the G(MCH) is necessary to achieve high bus speeds (differing from board-to-board, but usually something over 400MHz bus speeds). AMD boards were definitely more touchy with respect to their HTT speeds, but in my experience with current intel boards, you can crank it up as high as you want so long as your board can deliver enough voltage to do so. Hope that clears some things up!
